LAW STUDENTS AND PROFESSORS FROM THE NETHERLANDS VISIT THE SUPREME COURT

On 28 February, 58 law students and professors from the Netherlands visited the Supreme Court. They arrived to Latvia on a study visit organized by the University of Applied Sciences in Utrecht.

THE CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE SUPREME COURT CALLS ON YOUNG JUDGES TO BE ACTIVE AND RESPECT THEIR WORK

On 19 February candidates for the position of a judge and young judges who study at the Latvian Judicial Training Centre met with the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ivars Bickovics and learned about the history of the Supreme Court and the Latvian judicial system.

STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT THE WORK OF A JUDGE BY PARTICIPATING IN MOOT COURT ON SHADOW DAY

On February 14, within the framework of the Shadow Day, 15 students from Madona, Vecpiebalga, Ventspils, Tukums, Preili, Valmiera and Riga visited the Supreme Court and learned about the day-to-day work of the Supreme Court, its judges and assistants to judges.

AMENDMENTS TO THE LAW “ON JUDICIAL POWER” EXTEND THE AUTHORITY OF THE COUNCIL FOR THE JUDICIARY AND GENERAL MEETING OF JUDGES OF DEPARTMENTS OF THE SUPREME COURT

On 12 February, amendments to the law "On Judicial Power" came into effect, which significantly increased the role of the Council for the Judiciary regarding the career issues of judges, thus reducing the influence of the executive and legislative powers on these issues. Similarly, the role of the departments of the Supreme Court has been expanded when deciding on the highest stage of career development of judges – the cassation instance, as well as the authority of the Disciplinary Court has been extended.

SUMMARY OF CASE-LAW ON ISSUES OF SOCIAL LAW

The Supreme Court summarizes theses of rulings of the Department of Administrative Cases on essential issues of social law. For the convenience of those applying the law, rulings are grouped under the following categories: unemployment insurance, state social benefits, insurance period, the state pension, the right to request early retirement pension, sickness, maternity, paternity and parental benefits. The summaries cover the period from 2004 till the end of 2017 (depending on the time of the completion of the summary).

JUDGES: CASES MUST BE DECIDED ACCORDING TO LAW, NOT THE OPINION OF THE SOCIETY

The judges agree that any case must be judged by law, regardless of the public opinion, as answered by 98% of the judges to the public opinion survey carried out by the Public Opinion Research Centre SKDS about the attitude of citizens, advocates and judges towards the judicial system of Latvia. At the same time, judges also pointed out that they feel pressure from the media (58%) and the society (50%).
