CHAIR OF THE DEPARTMENT POINTS OUT OBSTACLES CREATED BY COVERT LOBBYING IN APPLICATION OF LAW

Covert lobbying, which is very common in Latvia, has caused great harm to the state. It is one of the elements that creates distrust to the state power - stated Veronika Krumina, Chair of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Supreme Court.

INTERNATIONAL COLLEAGUES VISIT THE SUPREME COURT AND THE COUNCIL FOR THE JUDICIARY

On Tuesday, June 6, within the framework of experience exchange visit organized by the Judicial Training Centre the Supreme Court was visited 16 participants from various European Union countries, including 9 judges of general jurisdiction, 2 administrative judges and 5 prosecutors.

JUDGES OF THE SUPREME TAKE PART IN PREPARATION OF COMMENTARIES ON THE CONSTITUTION

On Wednesday, May 31, the fourth volume of the Scientific Commentaries on Satversme (Constitution) was officially opened in Riga Castle. One of the authors of the commentaries is also Veronika Krūmiņa, Chair of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Supreme Court, and Jautrīte Briede, Judge of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Supreme Court.

A BOOK OF PROFESSOR KALVIS TORGANS ABOUT HIS WORK IN THE FIELD OF CIVIL RIGHTS AND HIS LIFE IS PUBLISHED

The fact that the professor Kalvis Torgans is a prolific author of legal literature is a general truth – he can take pride in both having the highest number of publications and the heaviest book of commentaries, as well as his legal findings are cited most often. The opening of the book "Kalvis Torgans in the field of civil rights and in life" on 17 May at the University of Latvia was a special event, because the book is about the author himself – a bright personality of Kalvis Torgans, who has also been Senator of the Department of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court.

PRESIDENTS OF THE SUPREME JUDICIAL COURTS OF THE EUROPEAN UNION EXPRESS SOLIDARITY WITH THE JUDICIARY OF POLAND

On 16 May the Network of the Presidents of the Supreme Judicial Courts of the European Union published a statement expressing concern about the activities of Polish authorities regarding the planned appointment procedure of the President of the Supreme Court and changes in the work of the Council for the Judiciary.

YOUNG LAWYERS FROM GERMANY VISIT THE SUPREME COURT

Some time ago, the young lawyers from Germany expressed a great desire to visit the Supreme Court of Latvia in order to get acquainted with the organization of work at the court and the judicial system as a whole. Thus, on 11 May Rihards Gulbis, Legal Research Counsel to the Department of Civil Cases, met with young lawyers from Munich, who are studying law and also are currently employed in judicial institutions.

FROM MAY 1 THE RECEPTION HOURS IN THE SUPREME COURT ARE CHANGED

From May 1, 2017, new working hours of the Supreme Court are set, and therefore the reception hours of visitors also are changed.
