AZERBAIJAN DELEGATION GETS ACQUAINTED WITH WORK OF THE SUPREME COURT AND COUNCIL FOR THE JUDICIARY

On Thursday, September 14, Fikrat Mammadov, Minister of Justice of Azerbaijan, representatives of Ministry of Justice and Javanshir Akhundov, Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Latvia, visited the Supreme Court. Ivars Bickovics, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, and Solvita Harbacevica, Head of the Secretariat of the Council for the Judiciary, introduced the guests with the work and functions of the Supreme Court and the Council for the Judiciary, as well as spoke about the judicial reform in Latvia. Delegations discussed similarities and differences in judicial systems of both countries. Representatives of Azerbaijan expressed particular interest in issues related to the selection and evaluation of judges.

Not only those who strive to live an ecological lifestyle and take environmental measures, but also those who create and provide an appropriate legal framework for protecting the environment care for the environment. Veronika Krumina, Chair of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Supreme Court, when addressing the members of the meeting of the Working Group on Environmental Law of the Association of European Administrative Judges, said that there is also the opportunity for and duty of judges to care for the environment.

STUDENTS OF SUMMER SCHOOLS OF TURĪBA UNIVERSITY AND UNIVERSITY OF LATVIA VISIT THE SUPREME COURT

On August 2, Anita Zikmane, Head of the Division of Case-law and Research met with the Summer School students of Turība University, who were from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Finland. Foreign students had arrived to Latvia for two weeks to take part in intensive course about mediation. Students had also expressed interest in visiting the Supreme Court of Latvia, as well as they intended to visit the Saeima (Parliament) and imprisonment institutions.

THE SUPREME COURT DISAGREES THAT DECISION TO REFUSE THE ADMITTANCE TO STATE SECRET SHOULD BE APPEALED AT THE DEPARTMENT OF ADMINISTRATIVE CASES

The Supreme Court sent a letter to the Ministry of Justice expressing its objections to the amendments to the Law "On State Secrets" announced on 15 June at the State Secretaries' Meeting. The Supreme Court opposes the envisaged appeal of the decision of the Prosecutor General before the Department of Administrative Cases of the Supreme Court as the first and only court instance.

SUPREME COURTS OF BALTIC STATES MEET IN ESTONIA

This year’s topic of annual meeting of the Supreme Courts of Baltic States is – the judicial reform and the organization and administration of judicial systems. The representatives of all three Baltic States will share experience regarding topical matters during the meeting of 15-16 June in Pärnu, Estonia.
