INSIGHT INTO SUPREME COURT BULLETIN – FROM CENTENNIAL OF THE SENATE TO EUROPEAN PROJECT MANAGAMENT

On the cover of the 15th issue of the Supreme Court Bulletin – photographs from the first event of the centenary anniversary of the Senate of Latvia – the planting of an oak in memory of Kristaps Valters, the first Chair of the Senate of Latvia. The pages of the Bulletin contain not only the most significant facts about the contribution of Kristaps Valters to the formation of the Latvian judicial system and the Senate and to strengthening of the principle of the independence of judges and foundation of administrative proceedings, but they also give an overview of the succession of case-law in civil cases examined at the cassation instance. The Supreme Court is the continuation of the work and traditions of the Senate of Latvia (1918-1940), therefore such a significant role is given to the history of the Senate.

UPDATED CASE-LAW OF THE SUPREME COURT IN CASES REGARDING PUBLIC PROCUREMENT

A compilation of the case-law of the Supreme Court in cases regarding the public procurement has been published on the website of the Supreme Court. Theses and examples of case-law have been structured and summarized. It enables to get acquainted with current case-law of the Court and thereby unifies the understanding and application of public procurement law.

CONGRATULATIONS TO JUDGES VALERIJANS JONIKANS AND ILZE SKULTANE – OFFICERS OF THE ORDER OF THE THREE STARS

Valerijans Jonikans, Judge of the Department of Civil Cases, and Ilze Skultane, Judge of the Department of Administrative Cases, were awarded the highest state award – the Order of the Three Stars – for meritorious service to Latvia. The Order of Chapters has awarded the judges with the Order of the 4th class.

On October 26, young judges and prosecutors from Latvia and other European Union (EU) states – Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Spain, Sweden, and Poland – visited the Supreme Court.

ENTRANCE OF THE SUPREME COURT IS CLOSED FOR RENOVATION; VISITORS SHOULD USE THE ENTRANCE OF THE MINISTRY OF JUSTICE

On Tuesday, October 24, the repair works of the exterior staircase of the entrance of the Supreme Court from Elizabetes Street are commenced. Visitors of the Supreme Court should use the entrance of the Ministry of Justice (from Tērbatas Street).

On October 20, the Latvian Institute of Law, with the support of the Supreme Court, the Latvian Bar Association, the Riga Latvian Society and the magazine "Jurista Vārds" in the framework of its program of guest lecturers, invited Ariel Ezrachi, director of the University of Oxford Centre for Competition Law and Policy, to give lecture in Riga on competition law and digital economy.
