THE PRESIDENT OF THE EUROPEAN COURT OF JUSTICE WELCOMES THE COOPERATION OF THE NATIONAL SUPREME COURTS

Within the project managed by the Supreme Court "Supreme Courts as guarantee for effectiveness of judicial systems in the European Union", from18 to 20 January the Head of the Administration Sandra Lapina, Head of Division of Document Administration Janis Supe, Press secretary of the Division of Communication Baiba Kataja, Scientific adviser to the Division of Case-law and Research Aleksandrs Potaicuks and advisor on EU law issues Solvita Harbacevica visited the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg for exchange of experience. Representatives from Supreme Courts of Lithuania, Spain and Hungary also participated.

COMPILATION OF CASE LAW ON DETERMINING, COMBINING AND REPLACING PENALTIES

DISCIPLINARY COURT AMENDS DISCIPLINARY SANCTION IMPOSED UPON THE JUDGE

Thursday, 19 January, having evaluated the compliance of decision with the rule of law that was adopted by Judicial Disciplinary Committee and appealed by the judge of district court, the Disciplinary Court partially annulled the decision of the Judicial Disciplinary Committee and amended the disciplinary sanction imposed upon the judge – issuing warning instead of reprimand.

JUDGE OF THE REGIONAL COURT WILL EXECUTE DUTIES OF JUDGE OF THE DEPARTMENT OF ADMINISTRATIVE CASES DURING VACANCY

As from 16 January, Ieva Viskere, the judge of the Regional Court executes duties of judge of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Supreme Court for the term of a vacancy of a judge.

MEETING OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE CONSTITUTIONAL COURT AND THE CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE SUPREME COURT

On 12 January, the meeting of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and the President of the Constitutional Court was held at the Supreme Court. During the meeting Aldis Lavins and Ivars Bickovics discussed the current topicalities and further cooperation of two highest judicial institutions.

FREE MEDIATION SERVICE FOR SETTLING FAMILY DISPUTES

"Mediation is a new set of knowledge accumulated over the years for resolution of disputes, and the public has to become aware that there exists an effective method for resolution of disputes," said the Judge of the Supreme Court Zane Petersone, together with representatives of the Ministry of Justice and State Inspectorate for Protection Of Children's Rights on January 11. They informed the media about the pilot project "Free mediation of family disputes".

MEETING AT THE SUPREME COURT WITH THE REPRESENTATIVE OF LATVIA IN INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS INSTITUTIONS

9 January, the Supreme Court held a meeting with Kristine Lice, the representative of Latvia in International Human Rights Institutions, to discuss topical issues of the European Court of Human Rights. Kristine Lice marked topical issues of 2016 of the European Court of Human Rights in cases decided against Latvia, with particular attention to substantiation of detention and retrial following the ruling of the European Court of Human Rights. Also the most essential issues of 2016 in cases communicated to Latvia were emphasized.

SUMMARY OF THE CASE-LAW ON HOUSING MANAGEMENT

According to request of the Supreme Court a study of case law on issues of housing management of apartment blocks has been carried out. A summary is prepared by Mg.iur Ilze Osa, Adviser to Saeima Legal Bureau, and Mg.iur Martins Auders, Deputy Director of the Construction and Housing Policy Department of the Ministry of Economics.
