KYRGYZ PROSECUTORS MEETS REPRESENTATIVE OF THE DEPARTMENT OF CRIMINAL CASES OF THE SUPREME COURT

In order to understand the role of the Supreme Court in ensuring human rights in criminal proceedings, on June 15, a group of the Kyrgyz prosecutors met with Janis Baumanis, Scientific adviser of the Department of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court. The visit is organized within the European Union project "Promotion of Rule of Law in the Kyrgyz Republic”.

WEB SITE OF THE SUPREME COURT OFFERS LATVIAN TRANSLATION OF 350 JUDGEMENTS AND DECISIONS OF THE EUROPEAN COURT OF HUMAN RIGHTS

To the archives of the rulings of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) translated into Latvian 48 judgments from the stocks of the Ombudsman's Office have been added; the number of documents placed in the classification of rulings of ECHR on the website of the Supreme Court has reached a total number of 350 documents.

On Thursday, 9 June, Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, accepted an oath of seven advocates admitted to the Latvian Council of Sworn Advocates.

GENERAL MEETING OF JUDGES OF THE DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL CASES PROVIDES EXPLANATION REGARDING RIGHT OF A NATURAL PERSON TO GIVE ORAL AUTHORISATION AT THE COURT HEARING

On Tuesday, 7 June, the general meeting of judges of the Department of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court provided an explanation on right of a party to a case – a natural person – to process authorisation by oral declaration at the court hearing. The general meeting, in accordance with Section 491, Paragraph One, of the law “On Judicial Power” and observing proposal of the Ministry of Justice, was convened by Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

DELEGATION FROM MACEDONIA LEARNS ABOUT ORGANISATION OF WORK OF THE SUPREME COURT AND THE COUNCIL FOR THE JUDICIARY

Today, on 8 June, representatives of the Ministry of Justice and Minister’s Office from Macedonia visited the Supreme Court to exchange experience. During the meeting, Macedonian representatives acquired more extensive information about organisation of work of the Supreme Court, and on work and topical issues in the Council for the Judiciary.

Secure and predictable legal environment is one of fundamental requirements for development of fair business and attraction of foreign investments; therefore, judges of the Supreme Court also participate in high-level discussions on improvement of legal environment in Latvia.
