JUDGES AND ASSISTANTS TO JUDGES OF THE SUPREME COURT MEET MARTINS MITS, HE JUDGE OF THE EUROPEAN COURT OF HUMAN RIGHTS

Continuing tradition of meeting of a judge elected in respect of Latvia to the European Court of Human Rights, the Supreme Court invited Martins Mits to a meeting on 26 May. It was his first visit to the Supreme Court as a judge of the European Court of Human Rights.

LAW ENFORCEMENT INSTITUTIONS FROM UZBEKISTAN ARE INTERESTED IN GOOD GOVERNANCE EXPERIENCE OF LATVIAN COURTS

On Monday, 23 May, representatives of law enforcement institutions from Uzbekistan visited the Supreme Court. They arrived to Latvia within the programme “Implementing Transparency and Good Governance: the Latvian Experience for Uzbekistan”.

REPRESENTATIVES OF THE SYSTEM OF JUSTICE OF JORDAN VISIT THE SUPREME COURT

On Wednesday, 18 May, representatives of the system of justice of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan visited the Supreme Court. As the delegation from Jordan included representatives of the system of justice, whose functions are related to supervision and administration of the court system, the Supreme Court familiarised guests with role and functions of the Supreme Court in Latvian court system, particularly stressing formation of the budget of the court, provision for work, personnel management and development of case-law. The delegation from Jordan was welcomed by Sandra Lapina, the Head of the Administration of the Supreme Court, and Anita Zikmane, the Head of the division of Case-law and Research.

JUDGES AND PROSECUTORS FROM EU COUNTRIES VISIT THE SUPREME COURT

On Tuesday, 17 May, ten judges of lower courts and five prosecutors from France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, Slovenia, Romania, Finland and Portugal visited the Supreme Court on study visit, to get familiarised with work of Latvian highest court instance and Latvian Council for the Judiciary, and share their experience.

DELEGATION OF THE SUPREME COURT OF UKRAINE COMES TO RIGA ON STUDY VISIT

This week, on 16-18 May, the delegation of the Supreme Court of Ukraine came to Latvia on study visit. Judges of the Supreme Court, Viktor Marynchenko, Bohdan Poshva and Anatolii Yemets visit Riga within project financed by the European Commission “Role of the Court of Cassation in Ensuring of Human Rights”.

PORTRAITS OF JUDGES – IN PHOTO EXHIBITION “LAWYERS IN CLOSE-UP”

On 11 May, personal exhibition of Boriss Kolesnikovs, the photographer and freelance photo reporter of the journal “Jurista Vārds” (“Lawyer’s Word”) was opened at the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia. Among 54 portraits of Latvian lawyers, there are also several portraits of former and current judges of the Supreme Court.

THE BOOK ON RETURN OF LATVIA TO EUROPE – ALSO ON TRANSFORMATION OF A LEGAL SYSTEM

On 9 May, on Europe Day, the presentation of the book “Return to Europe 1990-2015. From international recognition to the first presidency in the European Union” took place in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in presence of the authors.

DZINTRA AMERIKA IS APPROVED AS A JUDGE OF THE SUPREME COURT

Today, on 5 May, the Saeima (Parliament) approved Dzintra Amerika as a judge of the Supreme Court, at the same time releasing her from the office of a judge of the Administrative regional court. Dzintra Amerika, when nominating her candidacy in the competition to the office of a judge of the Supreme Court, applied for the office of a judge of the Department of Administrative Cases. Since September 2015, she has discharged judicial duties during the vacancy of a judge in this department.

WILLIAM DOUGLAS: BIBLICAL LAWS ARE ALSO USEFUL IN JUDICIAL CAREER

On Friday, 29 April, William Douglas, the judge of the federal court of Brazil, visited the museum of the Supreme Court and the Palace of Justice. In the visitors’ book he wrote words of appreciation for contribution of Latvian judges to establishment and restoration of the Republic of Latvia.

LATVIAN EXPERIENCE IN DEVELOPMENT OF UNIFIED CASE-LAW IS SHARED AT THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF THE SUPREME COURTS IN CHINA

This week, Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, and Anita Zikmane, the Head of the Division of Case-law and Research, participate in the conference of Supreme Courts of China and Central and Eastern European Countries, which is held in China.
