GUEST FROM SUPREME ADMINISTRATIVE COURT OF UKRAINE VISITS THE SUPREME COURT

To meet colleagues from the department of Administrative Cases and to get familiarised with management experience of the Administration of the Supreme Court, Romans Kaydashev, the Head of the Administration of the Supreme Administrative Court of the Ukraine, visited the Supreme Court.

PETERIS DZALBE IS ELECTED TO THE OFFICE OF THE CHAIRMAN OF THE DEPARTMENT OF CRIMINAL CASES OF THE SUPREME COURT, VESMA KAKSTE – TO THE DISCIPLINARY COURT

On 22 April, the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court re-elected Peteris Dzalbe to the office of the Chairman of the Department of Criminal Cases, and Vesma Kakste, the judge of the Department of Administrative Cases, was elected to the Disciplinary Court.

STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN FINAL MOOT COURT IN CRIMINAL LAW IN THE COURT ROOM OF THE SENATE

On Saturday, 16 April, the sixth moot court in criminal law dedicated to commemoration of the Professor Pauls Mincs, organised by the Student Council of the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia, ended in the Senate court room of the Supreme Court.

THE DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL CASES WELCOMES GUESTS FROM DENMARK

On Thursday, 14 April, the Department of Civil Cass of the Supreme Court welcomed guests from the District court of Frederiksberg, Denmark. Last year, when participating in Nordic-Baltic Mobility Programme for Public Administration, representatives of the Department of Civil Cases went on a trip to exchange experience in Denmark, and visited several courts, including the District court of Frederiksberg, which is the court of the first instance. Now the delegation of this court under guidance of Torben Goldin, the President of the court, was looking for exchange of experience in Latvia and Estonia. The delegation consisted of judges, assistants to judges and Heads of different departments of the court.

On Wednesday, 13 April, the Supreme Court in cooperation with the Council for the Judiciary organises the annual Media Day. Representatives of Latvian media, who write on issues related to justice, are kindly invited to participate therein.

REPORT ON WORK OF THE COURT IN 2015 IS PUBLISHED IN THE BULLETIN OF THE SUPREME COURT

Being yet printed, the 12th edition of the Bulletin of the Supreme Court, which comprises the public report of the Supreme Court on performance in 2015, may already be read in electronic form. “2015 was the year of intensive work and positive changes for the Supreme Court – after several years number of resolved cases exceeded number of cases received in the court, and number of cases pending decreased per 25 per cent,” Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, points out in the introduction to the report.

DELEGATION OF PRESIDENTS OF COURTS FROM DENMARK VISITS THE SUPREME COURT

On Friday, 1 April, the delegation of Presidents of Danish courts led by Mr. Poul Søgaard, the President of the Supreme Court of Denmark, visited the Supreme Court of Latvia. The delegation met Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Latvia.

GATIS BARDINS PRESENTS HIS MONOGRAPH ON IMPORTANCE OF THE DIALOGUE IN ADMINISTERING OF JUSTICE

In Latvian society, courts have been mainly perceived as an instrument of resolution of conflicts. Judges also usually see the court as an arbitrator of the conflict. The monograph “Importance of the Dialogue in Administering of Justice” written by Dr.iur. Gatis Bardins is the first scientific work in Latvia, which points out the much more important role of the court, namely, the role of arbitrator of the conflict, when understanding is reached between participants to proceedings.
