YOUNG LAWYERS UNIVERSITY STUDENTS GET TO KNOW THE WORK OF SUPREME COURT

Saturday, 29 October, 54 students of the Young Lawyers University from all over Latvia visited Supreme Court. Emerging law students were introduced to the work, expertise, solving of cases in the cassation instance court of the Supreme Court. Students found out how to become a judge and what skills and knowledge should a person have to perform this job successfully. To get to know daily life of the court, students had an excursion through the long hallways of the Court Palace, visited court halls and museum, as well as watched the movie Latvian Senate – 95. Yesterday and Today. Before leaving, students expressed a willingness to come to the court one more time and participate in a hearing as audience.

WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF INTERNATIONAL PROJECT, EXPERIENCE IS BEING SHARED ABOUT PUBLISHING OF COURT RULINGS, DATA BASES AND COOPERATION WITH UNIVERSITIES

On October 19, within the framework of the project „Supreme Courts as guarantee for effectiveness of judicial system in the European Union”, the representatives of the Supreme Court participated in a meeting in the Lithuanian Supreme Court and for three consecutive days took part in discussions and workshops together with delegations from Lithuanian, Hungarian and Spanish Supreme Courts.

BULLETIN OF THE SUPREME COURT – CONFERENCE MATERIALS OF JUSTICES, LEGAL THOUGHTS AND LEGAL PRAXIS

Currently being printed, the 13th edition of the Bulletin of the Supreme Court is already accessible in electronic form. The edition comprises wide range of information about the work of the Supreme Court, the Council for the Judiciary and other institutions of the judicial system. Courts and judicial institutions, faculties of law and libraries of higher educational institutions will receive the Bulletin in the printed version.

FINNISH LAW STUDENTS VISIT SUPREME COURT

Tuesday, 11 October, Members of the Student Association of the Faculty of Law from the Turku city Åbo Akademi University in Finland attended Supreme Court to get introduced to the Latvian judicial system, work and functions of the Supreme Court. Adviser of the Case-law and Research Division Reinis Markvarts told guests about competence of the Supreme Court and Latvian legal system in general. Head of the Division Anita Zikmane introduced students to the cases recently reviewed in the Court of Justice of the European Union accordingly to the prejudicial decisions issued by the Supreme Court. Students wanted to know what education and skills are needed to become a justice in Latvia. Also guests wanted to find out how valuable are studies or internship in international universities.

SUMMARIZED CRIMINAL CASE LAW ON ILLEGAL CROSSING THE STATE BORDER

The Division of the Case-law and Research of the Supreme Court has summarized the case-law in criminal cases on crossing of the state border (Section 284 of the Criminal Law), as well as the relevant case-law of the European Court of Justice in the field of restriction of immigration.
