FORMER JUDGES OF THE CHAMBER OF CRIMINAL CASES WILL DISCHARGE JUDICIAL DUTIES IN RIGA REGIONAL COURT

With the decision of the Council for the Judiciary of 8 June, Ludmila Polakova and Janis Tiltins, judges of the Supreme Court, are instructed to discharge judicial duties in Riga regional court.

GUNTA FREIMANE TEMPORARILY DISCHARGES DUTIES OF A JUDGE OF THE CHAMBER OF CIVIL CASES

To ensure work of the Chamber of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court until its liquidation on 31 December 2016, the Council for the Judiciary instructed Gunta Freimane, the judge of Riga regional court, to discharge duties of a judge of the Chamber of Civil Cases for the term of a vacancy of the judge.

THE DELEGATION FROM THE KIRGIZSTAN VISITS THE SUPREME COURT

On 29 May, the delegation from Kirgizstan visited the Supreme Court. Members of the delegation got familiarised with the system of administrative courts established in Latvia. Delegation was received by Jautrite Briede, the judge of the Department of Administrative Cases, and Anita Kovalevska and Diana Makarova, judges of the Administrative regional court.

PETERIS DZALBE RECEIVES MARK OF RECOGNITION OF CITY OF JELGAVA

Celebrating the 750th anniversary of the city of Jelgava, 11 people, who, with their work, ideas and expectations promoted growth of Jelgava, were awarded with Anniversary Mark of Recognition of Jelgava “Jelgava 750 – in Swirls of History”. Peteris Dzalbe, the Chair of the Department of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court, who comes from Jelgava, was also awarded with this Mark of Recognition.

THE SAEIMA CONFIRMS IVARS BICKOVICS IN THE OFFICE OF THE CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE SUPREME COURT

Today, the Saeima (Parliament) confirmed Ivars Bickovics, the previous Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, in the office of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court for the second term of office. 53 deputies voted for him, 27 voted against, and four deputies refrained from voting.

THE STATE AUDIT GIVES POSITIVE STATEMENT WITH NO OBJECTIONS TO THE ANNUAL REPORT OF THE SUPREME COURT

During the inspection, the State Audit has acquired assurance that report of the Supreme Court for 2014 is prepared in accordance with requirements of legal provisions, and it provides clear and true overview on financial position, its changes, and results of performance of the Supreme Court in all significant aspects Statement on correctness of preparation of report of the Supreme Court of 2014 is provided with no objections.

JUDGES OF THE DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL CASES MEET THE PROFESSOR CHAPPUIS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF GENEVA

On 22 May, during the visit to Latvia, Christine Chappuis, internationally recognised expert of civil law, and the Professor at the University of Geneva) met Aigars Strupiss and Zane Petersone, judges of the Department of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court. During the meeting, the discussion concerned role of the court in development further creation of the private law, on tort law, and on legal education, because the Professor is also a Dean at the Faculty of Law of the University of Geneva.

THE SAEIMA REPEATEDLY CONFIRMS ERIKS KALNMEIERS IN THE OFFICE OF THE PROSECUTOR GENERAL

On 21 May, the Saeima (Parliament) in secret vote repeatedly confirmed Eriks Kalnmeiers, the previous Prosecutor General, who was nominated by Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice if the Supreme Court, in the office of the Prosecutor general for the second term.

EMPLOYEES OF THE CONSTITUTIONAL COURT OF MOLDOVA GET ACQUAINTED WITH EXPERIENCE OF THE SUPREME COURT IN COMMUNICATION

On 19 May, when visiting the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Latvia within framework of project on exchange of experience, group of employees of the Constitutional Court of Moldova visited the Supreme Court. They were interested in information on work of the Supreme Court, and, in particular, in communication of the Supreme Court with the society.

Today, on 19 May, the Legal Affairs Committee of the Saeima (Parliament) supported candidacy of Ivars Bickovics, current Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, for repeated confirmation in this office.
