AN EXHIBITION DEDICATED TO AUGUST LOEBER IS OPENED IN THE SUPREME COURT

On 8 September, celebrating the 150th anniversary of the senator of the Senate of Latvia, August Loeber – the one of founders of Latvian legal system and civil law – the exhibition “Work and life of August Loeber” was opened in the Supreme Court. It is a unique event, because the exhibition has been opened in court premises for the first time. The exhibition designed using the collection of the Supreme Court, may be seen until 25 September.

AIGARS STRUPISS IS ELECTED AS THE CHAIR OF THE DISCIPLINARY COURT

On 4 September, the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court elected Lubova Kusnire, the judge of the Department of Civil Cases, Anita Polakova, the judge of the Department of Criminal Cases, and Andris Gulans, the judge of the Department of Administrative Cases, to offices of members of the Disciplinary Court, and Aigars Strupiss, the judge of the Department of Civil Cases, was elected to the office of the Chair of the Disciplinary Court.

MARIANNA TERJUHANA TEMPORARILY DISCHARGES DUTIES OF A JUDGE OF THE CHAMBER OF CIVIL CASES

To ensure operation of the Chamber of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court until its liquidation on 31 December 2016, the Council for the Judiciary supported the request of the Supreme Court to instruct Marianna Terjuhana, the judge of Zemgale regional court, to discharge duties of a judge of the Chamber of Civil Cases for the term of a vacancy of a judge.

ELECTIONS OF THE DISCIPLINARY COURT WILL BE HELD AT THE PLENARY SESSION OF THE SUPREME COURT ON 4 SEPTEMBER

At the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court to be held on 4 September, judges will re-elect three members of the Disciplinary Court and the Chair of the Disciplinary Court. Five years have passed, since, in accordance with the law “On Judicial Power” and the Law on Disciplinary Liability of Judges, the Disciplinary Court was established within the Supreme Court and first six members of the Disciplinary Court were elected for five-year term.

THE SUPREME COURT: ACCUSATION IN CASES ON BRIBERY MUST BE SPECIFIC

When stating accusation in criminal cases on giving of bribes and bribe taking, requirement of the Criminal Procedure Law to indicate factual circumstances of each incriminated offence, which determine legal qualification, and indications on specificity of accusation, which have been repeatedly included in case-law, have not been observed always. Such conclusion is made in compilation of court decisions in criminal cases on Sections 320, 321, 322 and 323 of the Criminal Law, elaborated by the Doctor of Law Valentija Liholaja in cooperation with the Supreme Court.

THE ESSENCE OF CASE-LAW OF 2014 – IN THE COLLECTION OF RULINGS OF THE SUPREME COURT

The Supreme Court succeeded to preserve the tradition and to publish annual – the nineteenth – collection of the most significant judgements and decisions of the cassation instance. The book “Judgements and decisions of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Latvia of 2014” in nearest future will be available in limited edition in stores determined by the publisher – state limited liability company “Latvijas Vēstnesis”.

STUDENTS OF SUMMER SCHOOL FROM UNIVERSITIES OF GERMANY AND LATVIA VISIT THE SUPREME COURT

On 6 August, students of law from the Humboldt University in Berlin (Humboldt Universität zu Berlin) and the University of Latvia visited the Supreme Court. Students came to Latvia within framework of summer school/ project “Projekt Netzwerk Ost-West” organised jointly by both universities.

“Virs mums ir tikai debesis” (“There is only the sky above us”), the sports team of the Supreme Court, returned from the 17th Sports Games of the Ministry of Justice and the Judiciary, having acquired three diplomas and wonderful emotions.

COPIES OF PROCEDURAL DOCUMENTS SUBMITTED IN ELECTRONIC FORM ARE ALSO NEEDED

One may submit procedural documents to the court both in paper and electronic form. Legal provision to file copies of a procedural document in accordance with number of parties to proceedings equally refers to procedural documents filed in paper and electronic form.

THE CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE SUPREME COURT ACCEPTS AN OATH OF AN ADVOCATE

On 13 July, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court accepted a vow of Irena Liepina, an advocate admitted to the Latvian Council of Sworn Advocates.
