INESE GRAUDA, THE JUDGE OF A REGIONAL COURT, CONTINUES TO DISCHARGE DUTIES OF A JUDGE OF THE CHAMBER OF CIVIL CASES

To ensure work of the Chamber of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court until its liquidation on 31 December 2016, the Council for the Judiciary instructed Inese Grauda, the judge of Riga regional court, to discharge duties of a judge of the Chamber of Civil Cases until the end of operation of the chamber.

JUDGES OF THE CHAMBER AND REGIONAL COURTS FILL VACANCIES OF JUDGES IN THE DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL CASES

As from 1 May this year until 31 May 2016 Zane Petersone, the judge of Riga regional court, and Intars Bisters, the judge of the Chamber of Civil Cases, will discharge judicial duties in the Department of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court during the vacancy of a judge.

THE LATVIAN LAW INSTITUTE INVITES TO GUEST LECTURE ON COMPETITION LAW BY ALISON JONES

With support of the Competition Council, the Supreme Court, Riga Latvian Society and journal “Jurista Vārds” (“Lawyer’s Word”), the association “Latvian Law Institute” within its programme of guest lectures by foreign academicians, organises guest lecture “Identifying restrictions “by object” in European Union Competition Law” by Alison Jones, the professor at King’s College in London. The lecture will be held on Friday, 8 May, at 10.00 o’clock in the Golden Hall of Riga Latvian Society (Riga, 13 Merkela Street).

THE PLENARY SESSION NOMINATES IVARS BICKOVICS TO THE OFFICE OF THE CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE SUPREME COURT

At the Plenary Session on 24 April, judges nominated Ivars Bickovics, current Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, as the candidate to the office of the Chief Justice. 23 judges voted for his candidacy, however, 15 judges voted for the second candidate – Andris Gulans, the judge of the Department of Administrative Cases. Two judges abstained from voting. The vote was secret, and 40 judges of the Supreme Court participated therein.

THE CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE SUPREME COURT ACCEPTS AN OATH OF TEN ADVOCATES

On 23 April, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court accepted an oath of ten advocates admitted to the Latvian Council of Sworn Advocates.

JUDGES WILL NOMINATE THE CANDIDACY OF THE CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE SUPREME COURT

On 24 April, at 10.00 o’clock, the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court is convened, where judges must nominate candidate to the office of the next Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, who must be appointed by the Saeima (Parliament) afterwards.

CASE-LAW IN CASES ON CLAIM COLLATERAL IS SUMMARISED

Compilation of court decisions in cases on claim collateral is published on the web site of the Supreme Court. Research is performed by the doctor of law Daina Ose in cooperation with the Division of Case-law of the Supreme Court.

SURVEY: LAWYERS AND STUDENTS OF LAW FIND INFORMATION BY THE SUPREME COURT USEFUL

The fundamental function of the Supreme Court is to administer justice and to develop case-law. However, the Supreme Court set informing and educating of society as its supplementary function, and lawyers and students of law have been one of the most importance audiences for work of the Court. To learn what would be useful to these audiences in cooperation with the Supreme Court, and how to use opportunities offered by the Supreme Court in more effective way, survey among lawyers and students of law was carried out.

THE SUPREME COURT PROVIDES USEFUL INFORMATION TO MEDIA ON MEDIA DAY

On 17 April, continuing the tradition, which was started last year, the Supreme Court invited both national and regional media to Media Day in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court invited journalists, who write articles and create broadcasts on justice.

SCIENTIFIC ADVISERS COMMENCED WORK IN THE SUPREME COURT

“The Supreme Court becoming only cassation instance as a result of court reform, its work will be even more important in court system – not by number of rulings, but by their importance in development of case-law, theoretical reasoning and use of scientific conclusions”, Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court said at the meeting with new scientific advisers of the Supreme Court. The Chief Justice stressed the fact that scientific analytical service has been developed to support work of departments.
