COURTS MUST ASSESS WHETHER DECISIONS OF THE ORPHAN’S COURTS COMPLY WITH THE BEST INTERESTS OF A CHILD

Persistent case-law of administrative courts in cases on decisions of orphan’s courts is developed and courts came to essential findings – such conclusion is made in compilation of court decisions, which is prepared by the Department of Administrative Cases of the Supreme Court in cooperation with the Division of Case-law and the lawyer Iveta Zalpetere.

STATISTICS OF THE SUPREME COURT: THE LARGEST ACCUMULATION OF CASES – IN THE DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL CASES

In 2014, comparing with previous year, number of cases received in the Supreme Court decreased for 585 cases, thus 4936 cases were received for review. Summarised statistical data show that decrease of cases was established at the appellate instance, and it is related to court reform and gradual elimination of court chambers. Number of cases received in the cassation instance has not changed – 3539 cases were received, moreover, number of cases received in the Department of Criminal Cases and the Department of Administrative Cases has increased.

PUPILS GET FAMILIARISED WITH WORK OF JUDGES AND EMPLOYEES OF THE SUPREME COURT

On Wednesday, 11 February, on the Job Shadow Day, pupils from several districts of Latvia visited the Supreme Court. 11 pupils from Kuldiga, Preili, Plavinas, Roja, Zvejniekciems and Riga became shadows of judges and employees of the court. Participants of the Shadow Day were truly interested in following job duties of a judge, assistant to a judge and employees of the Division of Communication in the Supreme Court.

THE JUDGE BISTERS WILL TEMPORARILY SUBSTITUTE A JUDGE IN THE DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL CASES

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court assigned Intars Bisters, the judge of the Chamber of Civil Cases, to execute duties of a judge of cassation instance – the Department of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court as from 9 February until 3 July.

COMPILATION OF CASE-LAW IN CASES ON INSOLVENCY PROCEDURE OF LEGAL ENTITIES IS PUBLISHED

Compilation of case-law in cases on insolvency procedure of legal entities performed by Helmuts Jauja, the leading lawyer of bureau of sworn advocates “Deloitte Legal” is discussed and approved for publishing at the general meeting of judges of the Department of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court.

THE DISCIPLINARY COURT REJECTS COMPLAINT ON NEGATIVE STATEMENT OF THE JUDICIAL QUALIFICATION COMMITTEE

The Disciplinary Court upheld the decision of the Judicial Qualification Committee regarding negative assessment of professional activity of a judge of a city court. Complaint filed by the judge was rejected.
