THE CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE SUPREME COURT ACCEPTS AN OATH OF TWO BAILIFFS

On 29 October, Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, accepted an oath of two bailiffs. Dana Krumina became the bailiff of Riga regional court, and Liga Kavite – in Vidzeme regional court.

MATERIALS FROM THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE DEDICATED TO THE COMMERCIAL LAW ARE PUBLISHED IN THE BULLETIN OF THE SUPREME COURT

Still being printed in printing-house, the 11th issue of the Supreme Court Bulletin is already available for reading in electronic form. The bulletin is expected eagerly, as in includes materials from the international conference “Commercial Law in Baltic Legal Space” dedicated to the 150th anniversary of August Loeber.

GREAT-GRANDSON OF VLADIMIRS BUKOVSKIS VISITS THE MUSEUM OF THE SUPREME COURT

In two years, in 2017, when there will be the 150th anniversary of the senator of the Senate of Latvia, the Professor of the University of Latvia Vladimirs Bukovskis, the Supreme Court of the Republic of Latvia, in cooperation with the family of Bukovskis, could organise some events dedicated to him, for example, to organise a conference or to collaborate in publishing of the outstanding “Study Book on Civil Procedure” composed by the classic of Latvian civil law.

ZEMRIBO PRESENTS MANUSCRIPT OF HISTORICAL DOCUMENT TO THE MUSEUM OF THE SUPREME COURT

The museum of the Supreme Court has received valuable gift from Gvido Zemribo, the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of restored Republic of Latvia – the manuscript of his speech presented in the United States of America in January 1991.

THE CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE SUPREME COURT MEETS STUDENTS FROM DAUGAVPILS UNIVERSITY

The Supreme Court continues its tradition, and on 19 October the first group of students of this year visited the Supreme Court within Days of First-year Students. Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, told the first-year students of the Faculty of Law of Daugavpils University about Latvian court system, topical issues in work of courts, the work of the Supreme Court, and personal experience of judicial career. In nearest future, I.Bickovics will meet students from the University of Latvia and Riga Stradins University.

REPRESENTATIVES OF UKRAINIAN PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION INSTITUTIONS AND NGO ARE INTERESTED IN EXPERIENCE OF JUDICIAL INDEPENDENCE IN LATVIA

On Friday, 16 October, group of representatives of public administration institutions, non-governmental sector and media from Ukraine visited the Supreme Court to hear on Latvian experience in prevention of corruption and promotion of good governance and transparency acquired by Latvia, when it became the Member State of the European Union.

THE CHAIR OF THE DEPARTMENT OF THE SUPREME COURT WILL BE THE CHAIR OF THE JUDICIAL DISCIPLINARY COMMITTEE

Yesterday, on 15 October, the amendments to the Judicial Disciplinary Liability Law came into effect, stipulating that in future the Chair of the Judicial Disciplinary Committee will be elected from among Chairs of departments of the Supreme Court.

INITIATIVES ON COMMUNICATION OF LATVIAN COURTS ARE PRESENTED AT THE CONFERENCE OF CHIEF JUSTICES OF SUPREME COURTS OF CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES

On Tuesday, 13 October, Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, will share experience on new initiatives on communication of Latvian courts at the conference of Chief Justices of Supreme Courts of Central and Eastern European countries. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and the Chair of the Council for the Judiciary will report on two documents approved by the Council for the Judiciary – Guidelines on communication of a court system and Strategy on communication of courts, sharing experience on issues, which urged the Council for the Judiciary to elaborate such documents and what are challenges faced by courts, when implementing communication documents in practical life.

THE BOOK ABOUT GVIDO ZEMRIBO, THE FIRST CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE SUPREME COURT OF THE REPUBLIC OF LATVIA, IS PUBLISHED

On 6 October, in Ligo room of the Riga Latvian Society House, the ceremonial opening of the book “Darbs dara cilvēku” (“The Work Makes a Man”) by Gvido Zemribo and Lia Gulevska was held.

PUPILS GET FAMILIARISED WITH JUDGE’S WORK DURING WEEK OF CAREER

During Days of Career, the guiding motif of which is “Open doors of profession!” pupils from several schools open doors of the Supreme Court and learn about profession of a judge. Today, on 7 October, pupils of the 9th Form of Riga Secondary School No.49 and pupils of 12th Form of Riga Secondary School No.13 visited the Supreme Court. This week, the Supreme Court also expects pupils from Riga Secondary School No.25, and next week – from elementary school “Ridze” and pupils from Jelgava.
