THE JUDGE RINKIS COMES BACK TO RIGA REGIONAL COURT

On 31 December, Normunds Rinkis terminates discharge of duties of a judge in the Supreme Court. Since 2 January 2014, Normunds Rinkis has discharged duties of a judge for the term of a vacancy of a judge in the Chamber of Civil Cases. In accordance with the law, the term of substitution may not exceed two years.

CASE-LAW IN CASES ON ENFORCEMENT OF CRIMINAL PUNISHMENTS IMPOSED IN FOREIGN COUNTRIES IN LATVIA IS STUDIED

The compilation of court decisions in cases on enforcement of criminal punishments imposed in foreign countries in Latvia is discussed at the general meeting of judges of the Department of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court and admitted for publication.

EXHIBITION ABOUT 10 YEARS OF THE THEMIS AWARD OF THE SUPREME COURT IS CREATED

Looking back to 10 years of the highest award of the Supreme Court – the Themis Award – special exhibition is created in the court. Through the story about this award and ten Persons of the Year of the Supreme Court, expanded insight into history of the court may be gained.

THEMIS AWARDS – PROFESSIONAL, CREATIVE AND SPECIAL – ARE GIVEN

On Friday, 18 December, Themis Awards of the Supreme Court of this year were distributed. Professional Themis Award was given to the Information Technology Division; Creative Themis Award – to Rasma Zvejniece, the Head of the Division of Communication, and Special Themis Award – to Valerijans Jonikans, the judge of the Department of Civil Cases.

RESPONSIBILITY OF JUDGES IN ASSESSMENT OF RESTRICTION OF FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS IS STRESSED AT THE CONFERENCE OF THE CONSTITUTIONAL COURT

On Friday, 11 December, when addressing participants of the conference “Admissibility of restrictions of fundamental rights in democratic state”, Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, pointed out that fundamental rights may also be restricted in democratic state in general interest of majority, and stressed involvement of judges in assessment of restrictions of fundamental rights.

COMPILATION OF CASE-LAW OF THE SUPREME COURT IN CASES ON PUBLIC PROCUREMENT IS UPDATED

Observing the increase of court cases related to procurements and more extensive range of legal issues examined therein, the Supreme Court updated compilation of court decisions in cases on public procurement, which was elaborated last year.

IMPORTANCE OF LEGAL AID PROVIDED BY THE STATE IN ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEEDINGS IS UPDATED AT THE OMBUDSMAN’S CONFERENCE

Elaborated amendments to the Administrative Procedure Law, which envisage granting of legal aid provided by the State in administrative cases, observing complexity of the case and financial situation of an individual, must be supported, - indicated Veronika Krumina, the Chair of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Supreme Court, when presenting a report at the annual Ombudsman’s Conference on Human Rights and Good Governance.

On Thursday, 3 December, Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, accepted an oath of six advocates admitted to the Latvian Council of Sworn Advocates.

BICKOVICS PARTICIPATES IN THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE NETWORK OF THE PRESIDENTS OF THE SUPREME JUDICIAL COURTS OF THE EUROPEAN UNION

Today and tomorrow, 26-27 November, Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, participates in annual conference of the Network of the Presidents of the Supreme Judicial Courts of the European Union, which is held in Dublin this year.
