The Supreme Court participates in international research project

As from May, 2013, the Supreme Court has implemented partnership in the project “Securing Europe through Counter-Terrorism: Impact, Legitimacy and Effectiveness” (acronym of the project is SECILE), which is fully funded by the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Commission.

Zane Petersone will continue to execute duties of a judge of the Chamber of Civil Cases

The Board of Justice instructed Zane Petersone, the judge of Riga regional court, to execute judicial duties of a judge of the Chamber of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court as from the 3rd of June, for the term of a vacancy of a judge.

The Chair of the Administrative regional court wants to move to the post of a judge of a district court

The Board of Justice supported appointment of Zita Kupce, the Chair of the Administrative regional court, in the post of a judge of a district (city) court stating that after approval in the Saeima in the post of a judge of a district (city) court the judge will execute judicial duties in Ogre district court.

The Senate will review protests submitted by the Chair of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate in extended composition of the court

Standard of the Civil Procedure Law about right of the Chair of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate of the Supreme Court to submit protest against ruling of a court that has come into effect, doesn’t comply with the Constitution – on the 14th of May, the Constitutional Court announced its judgement in the case “On compliance of the Section 483 of the Civil Procedure Law in its part about right of the Chair of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate of the Supreme Court to submit protest, with the Article 92 of the Constitution of the Republic of Latvia”.

On the 16th of May, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court accepted the oath of five advocates admitted in the Latvian Council of Sworn Advocates.

Prohibition for a judge to act in political parties is considered to be corresponding to the Constitution

On the 10th of May, the Constitutional Court announced its judgement, case No 2012-16-01 “On Compliance of the Paragraph Three Section 86 of the law “On Judicial Power” with the Article 102 of the Constitution of the Republic of Latvia” and considered legal standard, which prohibits the judge to act in political parties, to be corresponding with the Constitution.

The senator Dzalbe acquaints Dutch students with criminal procedure in Latvia

On the 7th of May, twenty students of criminal law from the Netherlands visited the Supreme Court. Students represent AdInformandum – association of criminal law and criminology students. Students arrived to Latvia to learn about Latvian justice system and peculiarities of criminal procedure.
