Topical issues on human rights in court operation and evaluation of professional operation of judges will be discussed in judicial conference

On Friday, November 2, annual Latvian Judicial Conference called by the Board of Justice will take place. Janis Bordans, the Minister of Justice Janis Bordans and Kristine Strada-Rozenberga, the Dean of the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia will address judges at the conference, and Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and the Chairman of the Board of Justice will present his report. The first part of the conference will be dedicated to reports presented by Peteris Dzalbe, Visvaldis Sprudzans and Gunars Aigars - Chairmen of institutions of judicial self-government – Judicial Disciplinary Committee, Commission on Judicial Ethics and Judicial Qualifications Committee, as well as to information about new system of evaluation of professional operation of judges that will become effective as from January 1, 2013. Ginta Sniedzite, lecturer of the University of Latvia will point out positive and negative trends in development of judicial rights in Latvia.

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court participates in Colloquium of Supreme Courts of the EU in Paris

Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, participates in 5th colloquium organised by the Network of the Supreme Judicial Courts of the European Union in Paris on October 25-26. The subject of the colloquium is “Appointment of judges of Supreme Courts, European Court of Justice and European Court of Human Rights”.

The Supreme Court invites to Days of first-year students

The Supreme Court is glad about extension of number of students of Latvian higher educational institutions, who chose to begin career of a lawyer making first steps on their way this autumn. In order to extend understanding and interest of lawyers to-be to the Latvian court system and allow them to have a look into one of the most interesting, and at the same time one of the most difficult legal professions – post of the judge, the Supreme Court continues its tradition and organises Days of first-year students in the Supreme Court as from October until December.

Materials of international conference on human rights and procedure of evaluation of professional operation of judges are published in bulletin of the Supreme Court

The 5th issue of “The Bulletin of the Supreme Court” is dedicated to international conference “Role of National Supreme Courts in Protection of Human Rights” which was organised by the Supreme Court in cooperation with Riga Graduate School of Law and which was the first international conference held in Latvia in which dialogue among the Supreme Court, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) and the Constitutional Court was formed. Conference reports are published in bulletin, including opinion of Ineta Ziemele and Danute Jociene, judges of the ECHR, on dialogue and cooperation between courts in context of concrete cases, analysis of dialogue between two European courts – the Court of Justice of the European Union and the ECHR, performed by Peter Gjortler, the associated professor of Riga Graduate School of Law, reports of representatives of Supreme Courts of Lithuania, Estonia and Poland touching systemic and structural problems in aspect of human rights, as well as opinion of Kalvis Torgans, Peteris Dzalbe and Dace Mita, senators of the Supreme Court, on topical issues of human rights and report of Gunars Kutris, the Chairman of the Constitutional Court, about dialogue between the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court as means of protection of human rights.
