Senators Briede and Mita are approved as ad hoc judges from Latvia in the European Court of Human Rights

Ad hoc judges from Latvia in the European Court of Human Rights are approved in the Cabinet of Ministers on the 13th of March. Jautrite Briede and Dace Mita, senators of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Senate, Kristine Kruma, the judge of the Constitutional Court and Martins Mits, pro-rector of Riga Graduate School of Law are included in this list.

Almost 5000 cases were reviewed in the Supreme Court last year

Statistical data summarised shows that in 2011, there were 7908 cases in proceedings in the Supreme Court, and it was for 468 cases more than in 2010. 4844 cases were reviewed, and number of cases pending was 3064.

Livija Slica has been promoted for the post of the judge of the Supreme Court

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court will promote candidacy of Livija Slica, the judge of Administrative regional court, to the Saeima for approval in the post of a judge of the Supreme Court without limitation of term of office. When evaluating candidacy of Livija Slica in two stages of open competition of selection of candidates for the post of a judge of the Supreme Court and having received positive statement of Judicial Qualifications Committee, committee for selection of competitors admitted Livia Slica to be appropriate for the post of a senator of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Senate of the Supreme Court.

The judge of regional court Krumina will execute duties of the judge of the Supreme Court

The Board of Justice instructed Sandra Krumina, the judge of Riga regional court, as from the 15th of March to execute duties of a judge of the Chamber of Civil Cases for the period of vacancy of the judge. Sandra Krumina was born in 1966. She got qualification of lawyer in the Public University of Latvia in 1997. She has worked in court system since 2000 – she has been judge of the Department of land books of Riga city, the judge of the court of Zemgales district of Riga city, but since 2009 she has been judge of Riga regional court. The judge received the 3rd qualification class in 2008.

Summary of rulings of the Senate is published in joint collection

With great delay due to preparation of collection, collection of rulings of the Senate of 2010 has reached its readers finally. The Supreme Court prepared regular collection of rulings in cooperation with public joint-stock company “Tiesu namu agentura” (“Courthouse Agency”).

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court accepts vow of bailiff

On the 29th of February the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court accepted vow of Daina Priedniece, the sworn bailiff of Riga regional court. “There is no fair justice without sentence executed” said Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court having accepted the vow, thus indicating essential importance of bailiffs in court system.

“Shadows” of the Supreme Court participate in court hearing

On Wednesday, the 15th of February, 15 pupils from Riga, Malpils, Aluksne, Cesis, Sigulda, Koknese and Majori got acquainted with work of judges, assistants to judges and also the Division of Communication of the Supreme Court. Having learned about Latvia’s court system and structure of the Supreme Court “shadows” went to court hearing in the Chamber of Criminal Cases. Before the hearing the judge Ludmila Polakova told them about litigation proceedings in criminal cases and progress of the concrete case.

The most part of clients of the Supreme Court are satisfied with work of the court; main problems are terms of review of cases and availability of case-law

Summarized results of questionnaire performed among clients of the Supreme Court last year show that 77% of lawyers – prosecutors, advocates, assistants to advocates and authorized persons touching the work of the Supreme Court in proceedings, are satisfied with it. It proves conclusion that members of society or court clients who really came in touch with court work, evaluate it significantly more positively than others.

The Supreme Court Bulletin: materials from Latvian Judicial Conference and publications of senators about topical issues of judicial theory and practice

The Supreme Court has prepared and published the third issue of “The Supreme court Bulletin” that will be delivered to Latvian courts, other institutions of judiciary, to libraries and higher educational institutions in nearest future. You may also get acquainted with the bulletin on the home page of the Supreme Court. In the first part of the bulletin, materials from Latvian Judicial Conference, which took place on the 25th of November, 2011, are published. Those are allocutions, reports read in sections of branches of law and summary of discussions.

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court accepts an oath of three bailiffs

On the 5th of January, Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, accepted the oath of thee bailiffs. By order of the executer of duties of the Minister of Justice, Dace Plesa is appointed for the post of a bailiff on territory of Riga regional court, Dace Cgojeva – on territory of Kurzeme regional court and Rudite Slivjuka – on territory of Zemgale regional court. Bailiffs vowed to be loyal to Latvian State, to fulfil state laws in good faith and in their best consciousness and confidence, to deport courts and judiciary with dignity, to observe instructions and orders of supervisory institutions and officials of those, to execute duties of a bailiff honestly, to protect legal interests of individuals, cases and values trusted and to withhold vocational secrets, being aware that they should respond for their activities in front of the law.
