The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court participates in Colloquium of Supreme Courts of the EU in Paris

Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, participates in 5th colloquium organised by the Network of the Supreme Judicial Courts of the European Union in Paris on October 25-26. The subject of the colloquium is “Appointment of judges of Supreme Courts, European Court of Justice and European Court of Human Rights”.

The Supreme Court invites to Days of first-year students

The Supreme Court is glad about extension of number of students of Latvian higher educational institutions, who chose to begin career of a lawyer making first steps on their way this autumn. In order to extend understanding and interest of lawyers to-be to the Latvian court system and allow them to have a look into one of the most interesting, and at the same time one of the most difficult legal professions – post of the judge, the Supreme Court continues its tradition and organises Days of first-year students in the Supreme Court as from October until December.

Materials of international conference on human rights and procedure of evaluation of professional operation of judges are published in bulletin of the Supreme Court

The 5th issue of “The Bulletin of the Supreme Court” is dedicated to international conference “Role of National Supreme Courts in Protection of Human Rights” which was organised by the Supreme Court in cooperation with Riga Graduate School of Law and which was the first international conference held in Latvia in which dialogue among the Supreme Court, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) and the Constitutional Court was formed. Conference reports are published in bulletin, including opinion of Ineta Ziemele and Danute Jociene, judges of the ECHR, on dialogue and cooperation between courts in context of concrete cases, analysis of dialogue between two European courts – the Court of Justice of the European Union and the ECHR, performed by Peter Gjortler, the associated professor of Riga Graduate School of Law, reports of representatives of Supreme Courts of Lithuania, Estonia and Poland touching systemic and structural problems in aspect of human rights, as well as opinion of Kalvis Torgans, Peteris Dzalbe and Dace Mita, senators of the Supreme Court, on topical issues of human rights and report of Gunars Kutris, the Chairman of the Constitutional Court, about dialogue between the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court as means of protection of human rights.

Jautrite Briede will be an observer in parliamentarian elections in Georgia

Jautrite Briede, the senator of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Senate, goes to Georgia today to observe parliamentarian elections on the 1st of October. The senator goes to Georgia during her vacation and being a member of association for transparency “Delna” which is Latvian department of international organisation Transparency International, she will participate in elections as international volunteer observer, not being paid for this job.

New Judicial Qualifications Committee is elected

New Judicial Qualifications Committee is elected in electronic vote on the 21st of September, in extramural Latvian Judicial Conference. Veronika Krumina, the Chair of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Senate, Gunars Aigars, the Chair of the Chamber of Civil Cases and Ervins Kuskis, the Chair of the Chamber of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court, Anna Biksiniece, the Chair of the Judicial Panel of Civil Cases of Latgale regional court, Silva Reinholde, the Chair of Kurzeme regional court, Zita Kupce, the Chair of the Administrative regional court, Gunita Galina, the Chair of Saldus district court, Kristine Zdanovska, the judge of Riga city Vidzeme suburb court and Inara Zarina, the Head of the Department of landbooks of Riga district court are elected in composition of Judicial Qualifications Committee.

At the opening of book of comments to Civil Procedure Law insufficient state support to jurisprudence is pointed out

It is the best that may be given by Latvian jurisprudence – said Janis Rozenfelds, professor, the Head of the Chair of Civil Law of the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia and the Chair of the Council of the Faculty of Law, at the opening of the second part of comments to the Civil Procedure Law on the 19th of September, evaluating work performed by group of authors of the book.

The Disciplinary Court leaves decision of the Judicial Disciplinary Committee unaltered

The Disciplinary Court was called in the Supreme Court on the 6th of September in order to evaluate rule of law of decision of the Judicial Disciplinary Committee appealed. The Disciplinary Court left decision of the Judicial Disciplinary Committee which initiates to dismiss a judge of the court of Daugavpils city from his post unaltered, rejecting the judge’s claim.

The second part of comments to the Civil Procedure Law is published under the scientific editorship of professor Torgans

Continuing publishing comments to the Civil Procedure Law, public joint-stock company "Tiesu namu agentura" has published the second part of comments encompassing chapters 29-60.1 of the Civil Procedure Law. The scientific editor of comments is Kalvis Torgans, the professor, Dr.habil.iur., real member of the LAS, the senator of the Supreme Court.

Delegation of the Supreme Court visits the Supreme Court of Slovakia

The delegation of the Supreme Court headed by the Chief Justice Ivars Bickovics on the 3rd of September departed for 3-day visit to the Supreme Court of Slovakia in Bratislava to exchange experience. Representatives of the Supreme Court will meet the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Slovakia Stefan Garabin, the chairpersons of the Judicial Panel of Administrative Cases, the Judicial Panel of Criminal Cases, the Judicial Panel of Civil Cases and the Judicial Panel of Trade Cases of the Supreme Court and representatives of the Court Administration.

Peteris Opincans has been appointed for the post of the senator of the Department of Criminal Cases of the Senate

As from the 20th of August, Peteris Opincans starts execute his duties in the post of the senator of the Department of Criminal Cases of the Senate of the Supreme Court. The decision about appointment of Peteris Opincans, the judge of the Chamber of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court in vacant post of the senator of the department was passed in general meeting of senators of the Department of Criminal Cases on the 6th of June.
