On December 6, the Disciplinary Court was convened in the Supreme Court to assess rule of law of the decision of Judicial Disciplinary Committee appealed.

Judges of the Constitutional Court of Tajikistan visit the Supreme Court

On the 4th of December, judges of the Constitutional Court of Tajikistan visited the Supreme Court. In conversation with Janis Neimanis, the senator of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Senate, they acquainted themselves with experience of implementation of administrative courts and litigation in administrative cases in Latvia.

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court participates in activities dedicated to 60th anniversary of the European Court of Justice

Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court participates in activities dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the European Court of Justice on the 3rd and the 4th of December, in Luxembourg. On Monday, the 3rd of December, Forum for Chiefs Justices of the Supreme Courts “60 Years of Court’s collaboration with national courts: results and perspectives”.

The Chairwoman of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Senate meets representatives of European Commission

On the 27th of November, Veronika Krumina, the Chairwoman of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Senate met representatives of European Commission Directorate-General for Justice who visited Latvia on post-programme supervising mission of European Commission and International Monetary Fund. Meeting was initiated by representatives of European Commission. Jeanne De Jeagher, Zigo Rutkovskis and Gatis Eglitis wished to discuss with senator Krumina issues related to effectivisation of work of Latvian courts.

Entrance for visitors of the Cabinet of Ministers is arranged through the Supreme Court

On the 21st of November, renovation of central external stairs of a building of the Cabinet of Minister started in Riga, 36 Brivibas boulevard, and it will last three months. During renovation, central door of the Cabinet is closed and visitors may enter the governmental building through the Supreme Court from Elizabetes Street, as pass post of the Cabinet of Ministers is also located there.

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court accepts vow of eight advocates

On the 20th of November, Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court accepted vow of eight advocates admitted to Latvian Council of Sworn Advocates. Number of advocates has been extended by lawyers of bureaus of sworn advocates Esmeralda Balode-Buraka, Gatis Dirnens, Inese Heinacka and Sanda Kraukle, as well as Lauris Sicovs, the Head of Legal department of Riga city Council City Property Department and Andris Strapcans, the Head of the Department of Acquisition and Prospective Development of Property of the same department, Artis Stucka, vice-secretary of state of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development and Raitis Tiltins, the chief-counsel of Privatisation Agency.

Senators receive Marks of Distinction for important contribution to development of judicial system and strengthening rule of law

On the eve of State Holidays, 22 employees of judicial system, inter alia Veronika Krumina, the Chairwoman of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Senate of the Supreme Court, and Edite Vernusa, the senator of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate, received Marks of Distinction of Judicial System. Award is also granted to Vilnis Vietnieks, the ex-senator. Senators received 2nd rank Marks of Distinction for important contribution to development of judicial system and strengthening rule of law.

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court accepts vow of bailiffs

On the 13th of November, Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, accepted vow of four bailiffs. Kristine Priedniece and Dana Galzone will execute duties of sworn bailiffs in territory of Riga regional court, Lilija Solovjova will execute her post duties in territory of Latgale regional court and Juris Snepsts will work in territory of Zemgale regional court.

The senators Neimanis in international conference reports on Latvian experience in implementation of administrative courts

In the beginning of November, Janis Neimanis, the senator of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Senate of the Supreme Court in international scientific conference in Astana (Kazakhstan) reported on Latvian experience in implementation of administrative courts, particularly touching issues about cancellation of administrative protocols in challenge proceedings in institution and court. Conference on topical issues of implementation of administrative proceedings was organised by German Association for International Cooperation (GIZ) to provide information and discuss on experience of implementation of administrative courts in other countries – Germany, Finland, Austria, Latvia, and Azerbaijan.

Topical issues on human rights in court operation and evaluation of professional operation of judges will be discussed in judicial conference

On Friday, November 2, annual Latvian Judicial Conference called by the Board of Justice will take place. Janis Bordans, the Minister of Justice Janis Bordans and Kristine Strada-Rozenberga, the Dean of the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia will address judges at the conference, and Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and the Chairman of the Board of Justice will present his report. The first part of the conference will be dedicated to reports presented by Peteris Dzalbe, Visvaldis Sprudzans and Gunars Aigars - Chairmen of institutions of judicial self-government – Judicial Disciplinary Committee, Commission on Judicial Ethics and Judicial Qualifications Committee, as well as to information about new system of evaluation of professional operation of judges that will become effective as from January 1, 2013. Ginta Sniedzite, lecturer of the University of Latvia will point out positive and negative trends in development of judicial rights in Latvia.
