THE SUPREME COURT ORGANISES THE CONFERENCE “COURTS IN LEGAL CULTURE SPACE”

This year is the 10th anniversary, since the Administrative Procedure Law became effective and administrative courts commenced work. Appreciating this event, which is important for Latvian court system, the Supreme court has supported proposal of the Department of Administrative Cases to celebrate it with public conference “Courts in Legal Culture Space”, which will take place on Monday, April 14, in the Great Hall of the University of Latvia.

LITERARY FORM OF LATVIAN LANGUAGE SHOULD BE USED IN PROCEDURAL DOCUMENTS OF THE COURT

Responding to complaint of the association „Latgalu savineiba” on the judge, who left the appellate complaint submitted in Latgalian language without progress, Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, does not see any violations in judge’s actions and rejected initiation of disciplinary proceedings.

THE SAEIMA CONFIRMS ALDIS LAVINS IN THE OFFICE OF A JUDGE OF THE CONSTITUTIONAL COURT

On Thursday, April 3, the Saeima (the Parliament) confirmed Aldis Lavins, the judge of the Supreme Court Department of Civil Cases, in the office of a judge of the Constitutional Court. 75 parliamentarians voted for candidacy of Aldis Lavins, one voted against and four members of the Parliament refrained from voting. Candidacy of Aldis Lavins was nominated by the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court, as in this March term of office of Aija Branta, who was confirmed in the office by the Saeima in 2004 upon recommendation of the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court, expired.

IT WILL NOT BE POSSIBLE TO APPEAL AGAINST CIVIL CASES ON SMALL CLAIMS UNDER CASSATION PROCEDURE ANYMORE

As from today, April 1, amendments to the Civil Procedure Law become effective, which stipulate new procedure, how appealed claims, which not exceed EUR 2100, shall be examined in the court. The court judgement in so called small claims shall be appealed under appellate, not cassation procedure in future.

THE JUDGE DONANS COMES BACK TO ZEMGALE REGIONAL COURT

Since 2011, Vilis Donans has discharged duties of a judge for the term of vacancy of a judge in the Chamber of Criminal Cases. The judge Donans will come back to his permanent place of work – Zemgale regional court.

KALVIS TORGANS, THE JUDGE OF THE DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL CASES, CEASES TO WORK IN THE SUPREME COURT

On March 31, term of office of a judge, which is stipulated by the law, will end for Kalvis Torgans, the judge of the Supreme Court Department of Civil Cases. „Mastermind – the professional in law of the highest standard:, thus Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, characterizes Doctor of Law, Professor Habilitus Kalvis Torgans, stressing that it was valuable school for the Supreme Court judges – to work beside the greatest authority in field of civil law, to learn from his thoughts, work methods and discussions.

“Notary Days is valuable and well-organised event, which serves to promotion of not only notary institute, but also accessibility of the court system and strengthening of rule of law in the state”, Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, expressed his appreciation of tradition of Notary Days, participating in the annual general meeting of Latvian sworn notaries.

On March 26, representatives of justice system of Croatia – Chairs of courts, judges and representatives of the Ministry of Justice visited the Supreme Court to exchange experience and to get acquainted with work of the Supreme Court.

THE LEGAL AFFAIRS COMMITTEE SUPPORTS CANDIDACY OF LAVINS TO THE POSITION OF A JUDGE OF THE CONSTITUTIONAL COURT

The Legal Affairs Committee of the Saeima (the Parliament) today, on March 26, unanimously supported draft decision of the Saeima for confirmation in the position of a judge of the Constitutional Court.

THE CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE SUPREME COURT POINTS TO INCREASING RESPONSIBILITY OF ADVOCATES TO NEW ADVOCATES

On March 20, Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court accepted the vow of six advocates admitted to the Latvian Board of Sworn Advocates. The assistants to sworn advocates Aleksandrs Balodis, Lasma Liepina, Dace Mihalska and Sandra Zarina, insolvency administrator Kaspars Olehnovics and self-employed lawyer Girts Osis became sworn advocates.
