Latest issue of the Supreme Court Bulletin: new positions, new visions, legal thoughts, discussions on the rule of law and the senator's personality

The second half of this year has been full of changes and events of the Supreme Court, and this is also reflected in the latest issue of the Supreme Court Bulletin. Aigars Strupiss has taken over the position of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The Bulletin provides information on the Chief Justice's first conversations with the highest officials of the state and the judiciary. The Plenary Session elected Normunds Salenieks as the Chair of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate – his vision of the future activities of the Department, as well as the vision of Dzintra Balta, the representative of the Supreme Court in the Judicial Council, running for a position in the Council, are included in the Bulletin.

The new procedure for selection of candidates for the position of a senator of the Supreme Court is approved

Under the proposal of the Supreme Court, the Judicial Council approved the new procedure for selecting candidates for the position of a senator. It aims to ensure that the best and most experienced Latvian lawyers become senators – the ones who not only meet the general standards of the position of a judge, but have also made a significant contribution to the development of law, have professional authority in the legal community and who will thus be able to contribute to the maintenance and development of the high standards of the court of cassation.

The Supreme Court nominates Anita Zikmane for the position of Advocate General of the Court of Justice of the European Union

For the first time, Latvia has the opportunity to represent the position of Advocate General of the Court of Justice of the European Union, and on November 13, a selection commission set up by the Ministry of Justice began its work, which will evaluate the nominees. Among the six candidates there are also Anita Zikmane, Head of the Division of Case-law and Research, and Jautrite Briede, Senator of the Department of Administrative Cases.

Opening of a Gallery of Portraits of former Chief Justices of the Supreme Court

On the 25th anniversary of the restored Senate, a Gallery of Portraits of former Chief Justices was opened in the Supreme Court. All three former Chief Justices of the Supreme Court who held the office after the restoration of Latvia's independence – Gvido Zemribo, Andris Gulans and Ivars Bickovics – took part in the opening ceremony.
