The US Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito speaks about strengthening trust in judicial power

The role of judicial power in promotion and maintenance of the rule of law – this was the theme of the International Judicial Conference which was organized on July 2 – 3 by the US Embassy in cooperation with the Supreme Court of the Republic of Latvia and the Ministry of Justice.

The State President assesses the work accomplished by the Supreme Court and the Chief Justice

The role of judicial power in promotion and maintenance of the rule of law – this was the theme of the International Judicial Conference which was organized on July 2 – 3 by the US Embassy in cooperation with the Supreme Court of the Republic of Latvia and the Ministry of Justice. At the opening of the conference, the US Ambassador in Latvia Katherine Todd Bailey specially noted the contribution of the State President of Latvia Vaira Vike-Freiberga in determination of the standards of the rule of law, as well as in the development of freedom and democracy. It was what the President said in USA last year that incited organization of a conference of such a high level in Latvia, and upon the invitation of Vike-Freiberga, the US Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito participated in the conference as an honorary guest.

Today, June 29, at 13.00, in Room 461 of the Supreme Court, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court invites journalists to a press conference to express the opinion on the published conclusions of the State Audit regarding the possible violations of the law standards in the activities of the Supreme Court in 2006.

Supreme Court bids farewell to the Chairman of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate Martins Dudelis

It is a big loss for the Supreme Court and the Latvian court system as such. The Chairman of the Department of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court Senate, one of the leading specialists of the Latvian civil law Martins Dudelis has passed away. Martins Dudelis was born on October 30, 1939, in the village Ergeme of the Valka region. After the military service, he started to work as a simple worker in the Valmiera region and the Riga radio factory. Parallel to his work, he fulfilled his dream – he acquired the speciality of a lawyer in the University of Latvia, and in 1968 he started to work as a judge in the Liepāja town people’s court.

Chief Justice of the Supreme Court accepts the oath of the attorneys

On June 28, nine newly admitted attorneys gave oath to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Andris Gulans. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court reminded the new attorneys that the oath is not just a formality of the law, but a guideline to the attorney’s everyday work. He asked them in their everyday activities to show respect to the country, the laws, judicial power and the people who will become the clients of the attorneys. “Attorneys in their work are closer to people, and therefore it will be your activities and attitude towards the inhabitants, especially simple people that will form the first opinion about the courts and the Latvian court system”, A. Gulans said. He wished the attorneys to be honest, professional and independent in their work.

Romanian anticorruption specialists learn the experience of the Supreme Court in the cooperation with the society

On June 27, the delegation of the National Anticorruption Department of the General Prosecutor’s Office attached to the High Court of Cassation and Justice of the Prosecutor General Office of Romania arrives in Latvia in an experience exchange visit. The goal of the Romanian anticorruption specialists is to learn the activities of the law enforcement institutions of Latvia, paying special attention to the aspect of accessibility and transparency of information. Therefore, the Romanian delegation includes not only the Head of the National Anticorruption Department, Chief Prosecutor Daniel Marius Morar and prosecutors, but also specialists of the communication service of the Department.

Chief Justice of the Supreme Court appeals the statement of the State Audit in full

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, considering that the opinion expressed in the statement of the State Audit “On the correctness of compiling the financial report of the Supreme Court for 2006” regarding the violations of the law standards infringes his lawful interests, yesterday filed an application with the Department of Administrative Cases of the Senate. He requested to revoke in full both the decision dated May 2, 2007, of the State Audit Council and the articles of the decision dated April 18, 2007, of the Second Audit Department of the State Audit, regarding him.

Eleven new notaries give oath to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court

On June 14, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Andris Gulans accepted the oath of eleven new notaries. For the first time the oath was given simultaneously by such a big number of notaries. It means that the prestige of the position of a notary increases, and the new lawyers advance to it with determination. The Chief Justice notes that appearance of young people among the notaries means a certain challenge, brings new trends and creates a healthy professional competition, thus promoting the increase of legal quality not only among the notaries, but in the judicial system in general. A. Gulans wished the new notaries to remember that with giving the oath they become part of the judicial power, and by their activities they have to care about the prestige of the judicial power.

Judges of the Supreme Court visit the European Court of Human Rights

The practice of the European Court of Human Rights will be discussed in the Departments and Chambers of the Supreme Court (ECHR), the colleagues will be informed about it by the Chairman of the Department of Criminal Cases of the Senate Pavels Gruzins, the Chairman of the Department of Administrative Cases Valerijans Jonikans, the senator of the Department of Civil Cases Marite Zagere and the Chairman of the Chamber of Criminal Cases Ivars Bickovics who have returned from the experience exchange visit in Strasbourg. The delegations of the Supreme Court and the Prosecutor General Office were invited to the ECHR on June 4 – 6 by the justice of the European Court of Human Rights Ineta Ziemele from Latvia.

Supreme Courts of Latvia and Lithuania agree on further cooperation

The Supreme Courts of the Republic of Latvia and the Republic of Lithuania will continue to develop cooperation and share experience, it was undertaken by the representatives of the courts at the closing of the visit of the delegation of the Lithuanian Supreme Court.
