IT WILL NOT BE POSSIBLE TO APPEAL AGAINST CIVIL CASES ON SMALL CLAIMS UNDER CASSATION PROCEDURE ANYMORE

As from today, April 1, amendments to the Civil Procedure Law become effective, which stipulate new procedure, how appealed claims, which not exceed EUR 2100, shall be examined in the court. The court judgement in so called small claims shall be appealed under appellate, not cassation procedure in future.

THE JUDGE DONANS COMES BACK TO ZEMGALE REGIONAL COURT

Since 2011, Vilis Donans has discharged duties of a judge for the term of vacancy of a judge in the Chamber of Criminal Cases. The judge Donans will come back to his permanent place of work – Zemgale regional court.

THE LEGAL AFFAIRS COMMITTEE SUPPORTS CANDIDACY OF LAVINS TO THE POSITION OF A JUDGE OF THE CONSTITUTIONAL COURT

The Legal Affairs Committee of the Saeima (the Parliament) today, on March 26, unanimously supported draft decision of the Saeima for confirmation in the position of a judge of the Constitutional Court.

THE CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE SUPREME COURT POINTS TO INCREASING RESPONSIBILITY OF ADVOCATES TO NEW ADVOCATES

On March 20, Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court accepted the vow of six advocates admitted to the Latvian Board of Sworn Advocates. The assistants to sworn advocates Aleksandrs Balodis, Lasma Liepina, Dace Mihalska and Sandra Zarina, insolvency administrator Kaspars Olehnovics and self-employed lawyer Girts Osis became sworn advocates.

CANDIDATES TO THE OFFICE OF A JUDGE GET ACQUAINTED WITH THE SUPREME COURT

On Wednesday, March 19, fifteen candidates to the office of a judge, who have in-service training in district courts, got acquainted with the Supreme Court. Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, addressing prospective judges, paid the attention to the fact that the new judge, when putting judge’s robe on, becomes part of the court system, and fairness, efficiency and authority of the court system becomes responsibility of each judge. The Chief Justice stressed the points the attention of new judges should be put to, also from the point of view of judicial disciplinary liability and ethics.

THE CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE SUPREME COURT PARTICIPATES IN DISCUSSION ON REFERENCES FOR PREJUDICIAL RULINGS IN THE COURT OF JUSTICE OF THE EUROPEAN UNION

Today, on March 17, Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in Luxembourg participates in the discussion organised by the Court of Justice of the European Union with Chiefs Justice of the Supreme Judicial Courts of the European Union on references for preliminary rulings submitted to the Court of Justice of the European Union by Member states.

THE JUDGE KRUMINA FROM THE REGIONAL COURT WILL CONTINUE TO DISCHARGE DUTIES OF A JUDGE OF THE SUPREME COURT

The Board of Justice instructed Sandra Krumina, the judge of Riga regional court, to discharge duties of a judge of the Chamber of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court during vacancy of a judge as from March 15.
