DZALBE PARTICIPATES IN OBSERVATION OF ELECTIONS OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF LITHUANIA

Peteris Dzalbe, the Chair of the Supreme Court Department of Criminal Cases went to Lithuania to participate in observation of elections of the President of the Republic of Lithuania as the representative of the Central Election Commission.

ALDIS LAVINS LEAVES FOR THE CONSTITUTIONAL COURT; AIJA BRANTA COMES BACK TO THE SUPREME COURT

Thursday, April 24, was the last working day for Aldis Lavins, the judge of the Department of Civil Cases, in the Supreme Court. The Saeima (the Parliament) confirmed Aldis Lavins upon proposal of the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court in the office of a judge of the Constitutional Court.

Happy news is published today in “Latvijas Vēstnesis” (official gazette of the Republic of Latvia) – the Chapter of Orders awarded Inta Kirse, the lifelong employee of the Supreme Court, with the Cross of Recognition of Fifth Class.

CANDIDATES FOR THE OFFICE OF JUDGES OF DISTRICT (CITY) COURTS DO FIELDWORK IN THE SUPREME COURT

Seven candidates for the office of district (city) judges, who applied and had been nominated to the office of a judge in Dobele district court, Riga district court, Riga city Zemgale suburb court, Latgale suburb court and Vidzeme suburb court, have been doing fieldwork in the Supreme Court for the second week already.

IMPORTANCE OF LEGAL CULTURE OF THE SOCIETY IN WORK OF COURTS IS UPDATED AT THE CONFERENCE OF THE SUPREME COURT

On April 14, more than three hundred interested people participated in the conference dedicated to the tenth anniversary of establishment of administrative courts in the University of Latvia, which was organised by the Supreme Court in cooperation with the Faculty of Law, journal “Jurista Vards” (“Lawyer’s Word”) and the Ministry of Justice.

THE JUDGE KEISS IS TRANSFERRED IN THE POSITION OF A JUDGE OF CASSATION INSTANCE

In accordance with the decision of the general meeting of judges of the Supreme Court Department of Civil Cases, the judge Aivars Keiss is transferred from the Chamber of Civil Cases in the position of a judge of cassation instance – the Department of Civil Cases.

THE SUPREME COURT ORGANISES THE CONFERENCE “COURTS IN LEGAL CULTURE SPACE”

This year is the 10th anniversary, since the Administrative Procedure Law became effective and administrative courts commenced work. Appreciating this event, which is important for Latvian court system, the Supreme court has supported proposal of the Department of Administrative Cases to celebrate it with public conference “Courts in Legal Culture Space”, which will take place on Monday, April 14, in the Great Hall of the University of Latvia.

LITERARY FORM OF LATVIAN LANGUAGE SHOULD BE USED IN PROCEDURAL DOCUMENTS OF THE COURT

Responding to complaint of the association „Latgalu savineiba” on the judge, who left the appellate complaint submitted in Latgalian language without progress, Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, does not see any violations in judge’s actions and rejected initiation of disciplinary proceedings.

THE SAEIMA CONFIRMS ALDIS LAVINS IN THE OFFICE OF A JUDGE OF THE CONSTITUTIONAL COURT

On Thursday, April 3, the Saeima (the Parliament) confirmed Aldis Lavins, the judge of the Supreme Court Department of Civil Cases, in the office of a judge of the Constitutional Court. 75 parliamentarians voted for candidacy of Aldis Lavins, one voted against and four members of the Parliament refrained from voting. Candidacy of Aldis Lavins was nominated by the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court, as in this March term of office of Aija Branta, who was confirmed in the office by the Saeima in 2004 upon recommendation of the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court, expired.
