INARA GARDA IS ELECTED AS THE REPRESENTATIVE OF THE SUPREME COURT TO THE COUNCIL FOR THE JUDICIARY

On 15 September, the Plenary Session or the general meeting of judges of the Supreme Court re-elected Inara Garda, the judge of the Department of Civil Cases, to the office of a member of the Council for the Judiciary for next four years.

THE JUDGE AIGARS STRUPISS IS ELECTED TO THE DISCIPLINARY COURT

On 15 September, the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court elected Aigars Strupiss, the judge of the Department of Civil Cases, to the office of the member of the Disciplinary Court.

GUESTS AT LATVIAN JUDGES’ CONFERENCE – JUDGES OF SUPREME COURTS OF LITHUANIA, POLAND AND GEORGIA

Independence and joint team – this was wished to Latvian Council for the Judiciary by Gintaras Kryzevicius, the Chairman of the Judicial Council of Lithuania and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Lithuania, when speaking at Latvian Judges’ Conference on 5 September.

EXPERIENCE ON INTERACTION OF COUNCILS FOR THE JUDICIARY AND INSTITUTIONS OF JUDICIAL SELF-GOVERNMENT SHALL BE SHARED

In discussion on interaction of Councils for the Judiciary and institutions of judicial self-government, which shall be held in the Supreme Court on Wednesday, 3 September, Latvian judges and representatives of Councils for the Judiciary from Poland, Lithuania and Georgia shall participate.

TRAINING IN MOOT COURT FOR CANDIDATES TO JUDGE’S OFFICE TOOK PLACE IN THE SUPREME COURT

On August 19, training of moot court for 20 candidates to judge’s office tool place in the Supreme Court, in cooperation with Latvian Judicial Training Centre. During the training prospective judges participated in moot court. The process was recorded and later discussed and analysed together with experienced judges – Veronika Krumina, the Chair of the Department of Administrative Cases and Dzintra Balta, the judge of Riga regional court.

COLLECTION OF JUDGEMENTS AND DECISIONS OF 2013 BY THE SENATE IS PUBLISHED

Collection of judgements and decisions of 2013 by the Senate of the Supreme Court is published and made its way to readers. This is the eighteenth Collection of the Judgements and Decisions by the Supreme Court Senate and it has been historical edition in some sense, as with amendments to the law “On Judicial Power” of 13 June 2013, the title of the Senate is deleted in Latvian court system as from 1 January 2014.

THE CABINET OF MINISTERS REVIEWS REPORT ON INFLUENCE OF LIQUIDATION OF THE CHAMBER OF CRIMINAL CASES TO PROCEEDINGS IN CRIMINAL CASES

On August 5, the Cabinet of Ministers reviewed information report prepared by the Ministry of Justice on influence of liquidation of the Chamber of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court to proceedings in criminal cases. The Chamber of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court operates until 31 December 2014, as along with reform of courts competence is redistributed among the Supreme Court, regional courts and district (city) courts, establishing that all cases shall be heard in the first instance only by district (city) courts, in the appellate instance – by regional courts and in cassation instance – by the Supreme Court. It is pointed out in the information report that it is possible to terminate operation of the Chamber of Criminal Cases in term stipulated by the law.
