THE CHIEF JUSTICE ACCEPTS AN OATH OF A BAILIFF

On 16 October, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court accepted an oath of Nauris Miglavs, a bailiff. Nauris Miglavs will be sworn bailiff of Vidzeme regional court.

MATERIALS OF TWO CONFERENCES – IN THE SUPREME COURT BULLETIN

Although the ninth edition of “The Supreme Court Bulletin” has been printed yet, it may be read in electronic form on the web site of the Supreme Court already. Materials of two conferences – allocutions, reports and summary of discussions heard at the conference “Courts in Legal Culture Space” dedicated to the tenth anniversary of administrative courts and materials of Latvian Judges’ Conference – are published in this issue of the bulletin.

RESEARCH ON CASE-LAW IN CRIMINAL CASES REGARDING DESTRUCTION AND DAMAGING OF PROPERTY IS PERFORMED

Research on case-law in criminal cases regarding destruction and damaging of property is discussed and accepted at the general meeting of judges of the Department of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court. Research on case-law is performed by Dr. iur. Valentija Liholaja, the professor of the Department Of Criminal Law of the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia, in cooperation with the Division of Case-law and the Department of Criminal Cases.

THE SUPREME COURT INVITES TO DAYS OF FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS

To extend understanding and interest of students – prospective lawyers – about Latvian court system and to allow them to get insight into one of the most interesting, but at the same time one of the most difficult legal professions, namely, the profession of a judge, the Supreme Court continues tradition and organises Days of First-year Students in the Supreme Court in October-December.

23 FROM AMONG 151 PERSONALITIES OF TODAY’S LAWYERS ARE FROM THE SUPREME COURT

On October 2, the book “Latvian lawyer of today. 151 personalities” celebrated its opening in presence of heroes of the book, in Small Hall of the University of Latvia. The book is unique already at present and it will remain such also for history.

JUDGES OF THE COURTS OF LOWER INSTANCES OF EUROPEAN COUNTRIES VISIT THE SUPREME COURT

On 30 September judges of courts of the first and the second instance from Hungary, Germany, Romania, Austria and Poland visited the Supreme Court within framework of the visit on exchange of experience, to get acquainted with work of the highest Latvian court instance and the Council for the Judiciary and to share their experience.

CASE-LAW OF ADMINISTRATIVE COURTS IN CASES ON PUBLIC PROCUREMENT IS SUMMARISED

Number of cases on public procurement increases in administrative courts every year, and consequently, range of issues reviewed in the Supreme Court extended as well. This fact urged the Department of Administrative Cases to summarize aspects of application of public procurement procedure and control of rule of law, thus establishing both an opportunity to uniform future case-law and an opportunity for interested persons to get acquainted with previous conclusions of courts together.

COMPILATION ON APPLICATION OF TEMPORARY JUDICIAL PROTECTION MEASURES IN ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURE IS UPDATED

Compilation of case-law comprising the most important conclusions of case-law of administrative courts on application of temporary judicial protection in administrative cases in the court is prepared in the Department of Administrative Cases of the Supreme Court.

JUDGES AND EMPLOYEES OF THE SUPREME ADMINISTRATIVE COURT OF LITHUANIA VISIT THE SUPREME COURT

Almost fifty judges and employees of the Supreme Administrative Court of Lithuania visited the Supreme Court on 25 September to get acquainted with work of the highest court instance of Latvia and to share their experience. Delegation of guests was headed by Ricardas Piliciauskas, the President of the Court.

THE DISCIPLINARY COURT REVIEWS THE FIRST COMPLAINT FILED BY A PROSECUTOR

The Disciplinary Court, which was convened in the Supreme Court on 22 September, for the first time reviewed complaint filed by a prosecutor against an order of the Prosecutor General to call the prosecutor to disciplinary liability.
