ERVINS KUSKIS IS ELECTED TO THE OFFICE OF THE CHAIR OF THE JUDICIAL QUALIFICATION COMMITTEE

On 7 November, the Judicial Qualification Committee elected Ervins Kuskis, the Chair of the Chamber of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court, to the office of the Chair of the Committee and Maris Vigants, the Chair of the Administrative regional court – to the office of the deputy Chair of the Committee.

THE CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE SUPREME COURT ACCEPTS AN OATH OF FIVE ADVOCATES

On November 6, Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, accepted an oath of five advocates admitted to Latvian Council of Sworn Advocates. Assistants to sworn advocates Janis Dambitis, Anna Kosinska, Ilona Kravale, Ruta Randare and Jevgenija Zinge became sworn advocates.

THE SUPREME COURT: LEGAL REGULATION ON JUDICIAL REVIEW OF ACTIONS PERFORMED BY EXECUTIVE DIRECTORATE OF THE COMPETITION COUNCIL IS MISSING

The Supreme Court draws attention to lack of legal regulation for review of court cases related to actions performed by Executive Directorate of the Competition Council, when entering and carrying out a search in properties of legal entities of the market or their employees.

Having reached maximum age for the office of a judge stipulated in the law “On Judicial Power”, judge’s duties of Gunars Aigars, the Chair of the Chamber of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court, expired on 31 October.

THE JUDGE RAIMONDS GRAVELSINS DISCHARGES DUTIES OF THE CHAIR OF THE CHAMBER OF CIVIL CASES

As from today, 3 November, 3.novembra, the judge Raimonds Gravelsins discharges duties of the Chair of the Chamber of Civil Cases. The judge will discharge duties of the Chair of the Chamber until election of the new Chair of the Chamber of Civil Cases.

FINAL OF THE FIRST MOOT COURT IN ADMINISTRATIVE LAW TAKES PLACE IN THE SUPREME COURT

On Saturday, October 25, the first moot court in administrative law organised by the European Law Students’ Association in Latvia (ELSA Latvia) took place in premises of the University of Latvia and the Supreme Court. During the moot court students solved catch questions on administrative procedure and competition law.

Thinking about future occupation, inquisitive pupils from five schools of Riga visited the Supreme Court last week. Pupils met judges, telling about judge’s office, how they decided to become judges in their time.

STORY ABOUT JANIS SKUDRE, THE SENATOR OF THE SENATE OF LATVIA IS PUBLISHED IN A BOOK

Janis Skudre was one of seven senators of the Senate of Latvia - the highest court instance of the first period of the Free State of Latvia, whose life after the Soviet occupation ended tragically in Gulag camps in Siberia. Story about life of Janis Skudre is written by Vilnis Vietnieks, a man from the same district, Selonian, former senator of the Department of Criminal Cases of the Senate of the Supreme Court. First chapters of the story “And a star falls into the lake” were published in the journal “Jurista Vārds” (“Lawyer’s Word”) and regional newspapers, and now the story may be read together in the book “Saukas skices” (“Sketches of Sauka”) by Vilnis Vietnieks, which has just been published.

EXPERTS IN ISSUES RELATED TO HUMAN TRAFFICKING FROM THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA VISIT THE SUPREME COURT

On 17 October, two experts in issues related to human trafficking from the United States of America – Virginia Mary Kendall, the judge for a district court and Daniel H.Weiss, a federal prosecutor, visited the Supreme Court. During meeting with Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, and judges of the Department of Criminal Cases and the Chamber of Criminal Cases, issues related to the most significant problems regarding investigation and trials of such cases were discussed.
