COMPOSITION OF JUDGES OF DEPARTMENTS OF CIVIL CASES AND CRIMINAL CASES IS EXTENDED

As from January 1, Marika Senkane, the judge of the Chamber of Civil Cases is appointed to the office of a judge of the Department of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court, and Anita Polakova and Aija Branta, judges of the Chamber of Criminal Cases, are appointed to the office of a judge of the Department of Criminal Cases.

THE JUDGE UMINSKIS RETURNS TO RIGA REGIONAL COURT

On 30 December, Aivars Uminskis terminates to discharge judicial duties in the Supreme Court. Since 2011, Aivars Uminskis had discharged duties of a judge for the term of a vacancy of a judge in the Chamber of Criminal Cases.

GUNARS AIGARS – PERSON OF THE YEAR OF THE SUPREME COURT 2014

Gunars Aigars, the former Chair of the Chamber of Civil Cases became the Person of the Year of the Supreme Court-2014 in a collective vote. Colleagues, when nominating Gunars Aigars to this nomination, stressed that he was a man, whose lifelong contribution to work of a judge does not require particular reasoning of nominating – it is approval of gratitude and respect. He was granted the title of the Judge Emeritus this year.

HISTORY OF THE CHAMBER OF CRIMINAL CASES IS WRAPPED UP IN A BOOK

Closing a page of history of the Chamber of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court, history of this court instance, which was important for Latvian court system, is summed up and small book is published, to opening of which the Supreme Court invited present and former judges, assistants to judges and present employees of the Chamber of Criminal Cases and Heads of other structural units on 18 December.

COURT SYSTEM OF LATVIA AS OF THE NEXT STATE PRESIDING IN THE COUNCIL OF THE EUROPEAN UNION IS PRESENTED

On 11 and 12 December, Aija Branta, the judge of the Chamber of Criminal Cases, as representative of the state of following presidency in the Council of the European Union reads report on topical issues of Latvian court system at the Plenary Session of the Council of Europe’s Commission for the Efficiency of Justice held in Strasbourg.

500 STUDENTS AND PUPILS VISITED THE SUPREME COURT DURING DAYS OF FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS

On 10 December, last this-year groups of students and pupils from the University College of Economics and Culture, Riga Secondary School of Nordic countries and Agenskalna State Secondary School visited the Supreme Court, getting acquainted with work of the court system and the Supreme Court. 14 groups of students, in total 502 students and pupils from the University of Latvia, Riga University named by Stradins, Daugavpils University, Business High School “Turiba”, Rezekne High School, University College of Economics and Culture, Law College, Albert’s College, Riga Secondary School of Nordic countries, Agenskalna State Secondary School and Ogre State Secondary School visited the Supreme Court during Days of First-Year Students.

THE SUPREME COURT LOOKS FOR SCIENTIFIC ANALYTICAL ADVISERS

The Supreme Court announced competition for three offices of scientific analytical advisers – by one vacancy in each department of the Supreme Court, namely, the Department of Administrative Cases, the Department of Civil Cases and the Department of Criminal Cases.

JUDGEMENTS OF THE CONSTITUTIONAL COURT ARE VALUABLE SOURCE OF LAW FOR COURTS

Courts use interpretation of legal norms included in judgements of the Constitutional Court in reasoning of their rulings, and it is one of sources of law courts refer to, which is used more extensively – Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, said at the conference “Judgement of the Constitutional Court as source of law” on 5 December.

JUDGES AND LEGAL SCIENTISTS FROM MOLDOVA GET ACQUAINTED WITH LATVIAN COURT SYSTEM

On 2 December delegation from Moldova – judges of first instance courts of Chisinau and lecturers of the State University of Moldova and the European University of Moldova paid a visit to the Supreme Court to exchange experience.
