The highest recognition of the Supreme Court – title of the Person of the Year and Themis Award in 2012 was given to Zigmants Gencs, the Chair of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate.

Colleagues expressed their recognition to Zigmants Gencs for life-long contribution to development of court system – he has been the judge of the Supreme Court for 34 years, being the senator of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate since the Senate was formed in 1996, and since 2010 he has been the Chair of the department.

Zigmants Gencs is one of rare judges, who find time and desire to write books beside routine work.  In 2012, comments of Zigmants Gencs to Civil Law in succession were published, and he is co-author of comments to Civil Procedure Law also published in 2012.

Zigmants Gencs celebrated respected anniversary this year, and in celebrations he revealed himself to colleagues as a creative personality being able to combine judge’s work and such creative expression as painting.

Evaluating contribution of judges and employees in direct work and life of the Supreme Court in general, as well as mutual responsiveness and social activity, three more traditional Themis Awards – the Judge of the Year, the Assistant to the Judge of the Year and the Employee of the Year – were given.

Title of the Judge of the Year-2012 was given to Edite Vernusa, the senator of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate; Assistant to the Judge of the Year-2012 – to Gunvaldis Davidovics, the assistant to the senator of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate, and the Employee of the Year-2012 – to Uldis Cuma-Zvirbulis, the Head of the Finance Division.

Themis Awards have been given in the Supreme Court for the eighth year. Vote is kept secret, being performed in two tours, and every judge and employee during the first tour may nominate those people, who, in his/her opinion, deserve these titles.  In the second tour, vote is performed for three candidates, for nomination of which most votes were given.

Title of the Supreme Court, the Person of the Year, was given to ex-senators Rolands Krauze, Imants Fridrihsons and Roberts Guntis Namatevs, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ivars Bickovics and the ex-Chief Justice Andris Gulans, the Chair of the Chamber of Civil Cases Gunars Aigars and the x-judge of the same chamber Aiva Zarina, as well as Pavels Gruzins, the Head of the Division of Case-law.
