On October 21, within the framework of the public diplomacy initiative "Rule of Law" implemented by the Embassy of the Netherlands, Govert Jan Bijl de Vroe, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Republic of Latvia, paid a courtesy visit to the Supreme Court.

In the Supreme Court, Govert Jan Bijl de Vroe met with the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Aigars Strupiss. The Ambassador addressed the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court with a call to enhance co-operation between Latvia and the Netherlands, with the embassy acting as a mediator. Govert Jan Bijl de Vroe shared his experience in developing co-operation between countries in various fields, acknowledging that the rule of law is a new area for him, a new, wide territory in which to promote co-operation between the Netherlands and Latvia.

Aigars Strupiss introduced the guest with the priorities of the Supreme Court, distinguishing the areas where such cooperation would be the most significant. As the main tasks Aigars Strupiss mentioned the improvement of public understanding of the work of courts because “the justice has to be seen, not just delivered”, as well as the further education of judges, involving various experts, including foreign lecturers. The greatest emphasis in the co-operation between the states could be placed on criminal rights – examination of criminal cases, criminal investigation, ensuring the exchange of experience between Latvian and Dutch judges, for the most part – new judges.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Govert Jan Bijl de Vroe confirmed the Embassy's readiness to help establish contacts with the Kingdom of the Netherlands on any issues of interest, thus further promoting co-operation between the two countries in the field of justice.

Govert Jan Bijl de Vroe began his career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands in 1988 and has previously served as the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Portuguese Republic. In 2018, he was appointed as the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Republic of Latvia.
