More than 80 employees of regional and district courts visited the Supreme Court and the Court Administration on Monday, October 29, to get acquainted with the work of these institutions.

This was the first time when “Open Day” was organized solely for the employees of courts of Latvia, and its purpose, as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ivars Bickovics pointed out, was to introduce both the work of the court of cassation and to allow every court employee to recognize the importance of their work in the unified judicial system.

The Chief Justice mentioned that there were several judges of the Supreme Court who began their career as secretaries of court sessions in district courts and have gone through all career advancement process and have attained the highest rank – a position of a judge or senator of the Supreme Court. The Chief Justice introduced the guests with the specifics of the work of the Supreme Court and the amount of work, while the Head of Administration Sandra Lapina – with the staff of the Supreme Court.

Later on, the guests got acquainted with the work of the Supreme Court’s employees of their own choice. The greatest interest was shown about the position of a judge's assistant, as well as the work of the Division of Case-law and Research. There was also a keen interest in the work of the Chancellery, the Division of Document Administration, the Division of Human Resources and the Division of Communication.

The participants of the “Open Day” also visited the Supreme Court Museum, walked around the Palace of Justice and watched the documentary "Senators".

In the second half of the day, visitors got acquainted with the work of the Court Administration. Edvins Balsevics, Director of the Court Administration, introduced the secretaries of a court session, the judge’s assistants and the court interpreters with the functions and this year’s challenges of the institution, and answered the questions of interest.

After the presentation of the Director, the staff visited the Information Technology Unit, the Project Management and International Cooperation Unit, the Division of Human Resource and Legal Department, the Chancellery, the Unit for European Social Fund project "Justice for Development".
