On March 31, term of office of a judge, which is stipulated by the law, will end for Kalvis Torgans, the judge of the Supreme Court Department of Civil Cases. 

„Mastermind – the professional in law of the highest standard:, thus Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, characterizes Doctor of Law, Professor Habilitus Kalvis Torgans, stressing that it was valuable school for the Supreme Court judges – to work beside the greatest authority in field of civil law, to learn from his thoughts, work methods and discussions.  

Zigmants Gencs, the Chair of the Department of Civil Cases, calls the professor Kalvis Torgans the brightest star of the Department of Civil Cases, although his term served in judicial office was comparatively short – six years.  Knowledge, experience and authority of K.Torgans had been the best arguments not only in discussions on court cases, but also within development of case-law and groups working of draft laws.

Working capacity and energy of Kalvis Torgans are worth of admirable – he has been the author of more than 35 books and approximately 250 other publications. Today, on March 31, the professor also celebrates his 75th anniversary opening a new book “Obligations law”.

Kalvis Torgans became the senator of the Supreme Court Department of Civil Cases in 2008. Having reached maximum age for the office of a judge, in 2009 his term of office was prolonged for five years in accordance with opportunity stipulated by the law of that time.  

Kalvis Torgans is awarded with the Order of Three Stars, and the Mark of Distinction of the System of Justice of the 1st rank. In 2011, he received award of the Year of the University of Latvia in science for foundation of scientific school in civil law, and in 2013 he received the Themis Award of the Supreme Court in nomination “The Person of the Year-2013”.
