Senate of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, after hearing the references about the candidates nominated by the Presidium of the Academy, decided to award the Grand Medal of the Latvian Academy of Sciences to academicians Vija Klusa and Kalvis Torgans.

Actual member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences Dr.habil.iur. Kalvis Torgans will receive the Grand Medal for introducing modern civil law school in law science in Latvia and for significant contribution to the implementation of theoretical knowledge in practice.

Traditionally, the Grand Medals of the Latvian Academy of Sciences are given at the Academy's general meeting in autumn, which will be held in November this year.

The Grand Medal of the Latvian Academy of Sciences is the highest award given by the Academy to Latvian and foreign scientists for outstanding creative achievements.

So far, among 50 recipients of the Grand Medal of Latvian Academy of Sciences there have been only two lawyers - Dietrich André Loeber in 1995 and Talavs Jundzis in 2016.

The Supreme Court is grateful for the acknowledgment expressed to work of the Judge Emeritus of the Supreme Court. Kalvis Torgans had been a judge of the Department of Civil Cases from 2008 to 2014 and has made a significant contribution to the development of case-law of the department.
