What is the guarantee of a fair trial? Are justice and rule of law synonymous? The conversation festival LAMPA will seek answers to these questions at the "people's court", which means that audience will have a special opportunity to step in shoes of judges and make decisions about imposition of penalties, tenant eviction, and adoption.

Visitors will be able to assess the extent to which the judgements of the "People's Court" will differ from those of the judges. In turn, Dr.med. Gunta Andzane, doctor psychotherapist, president of the Latvian Association of Medical Psychotherapists, will help to understand why the rule of law contained in the court judgment often does not coincide with the public's understanding of justice and how to promote confidence in the judiciary.

“People's Court” is part of the discussion series organized by the Supreme Court, which will take place at the “Tent of Justice” on Friday, June 28, from 2.30 pm till 4 pm.

The Supreme Court encourages to speak about three basic topics – court, justice and the backbone of a judge. What is a court? A sentencer or a conflict resolver? An interpreter of law or an administrator of justice? How can a judge maintain a strong backbone and courage to be independent? Are public trust ratings the only benchmark for court work?

The participants of the discussion will be Ivars Bickovics, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Veronika Krumina, Chair of the Department of Administrative Cases, Aigars Strupiss, Chair of the Department of Civil Cases, and Artis Eglitis, Pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia, Head of Development of the Pastoral Leadership Institute International. Dr.iur, Edvins Danovskis, the assistant professor of the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia, will lead the discussion and the “People's Court”.

Discussion organized by the Supreme Court will be one of the twelve conversations that will take place during the festival LAMPA on June 28 and 29 in the “Tent of Justice”. Several institutions invited by publishers of “Latvijas Vestnesis”, such as the Supreme Court, regional courts, judicial associations, the Court Administration, publishers of “Jurista Vards”, LV portals, the Ministry of Justice, Ombudsman's Office, Council of Sworn Notaries, Council of Sworn Advocates, Council of Sworn Bailiffs, Law Office "Fort", will unite in search for answers to topical questions. Let us speak boldly about what matters! Let us be open about what is ambiguous!

We invite interested listeners to participate in the discussion and in the "People's Court". See you in the “Tent of Justice” in Cesis Castle Park, Friday, June 28, from 2.30 pm till 4 pm!
