This week, on 16-18 May, the delegation of the Supreme Court of Ukraine came to Latvia on study visit. Judges of the Supreme Court, Viktor Marynchenko, Bohdan Poshva and Anatolii Yemets visit Riga within project financed by the European Commission “Role of the Court of Cassation in Ensuring of Human Rights”.*

On Monday, Ukrainian colleagues got familiarised with the Supreme Court of Latvia. During the conversation with Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Edite Vernusa, Peteris Dzalbe and Veronika Krumina, Chairs of all departments, Anita Zikmane, the Head of the  Division of Case-law and Research, and Sandra Lapina, the Head of the Administration of the Supreme Court, they learned about the work of the Supreme Court, exchanging information and opinions about  reforms of court systems – reforms were implemented in Ukraine in 2010, but in Latvia it has been done currently.

Representatives of the Supreme Court of Ukraine were also interested in work of the Council for the Judiciary and issues related to disciplinary liability. Therefore, the second discussion was held with Ivars Bickovics, the Chair of the Council for the Judiciary, Aigars Strupiss, the Chair of the Disciplinary Court, and Peteris Dzalbe, the Chair of the Judicial Disciplinary Committee. 

The Supreme Court organises further visit of the delegation of the Supreme Court of Ukraine to Riga. On Monday, guests also visited the Administrative regional court and met its Chair Maris Vigants and judges. Observing the fact that Maris Vigants has also been the Chair of the Judicial Qualification Committee, the conversation also included issues related to this institution of judicial self-government.

On Tuesday, guests will get familiarised with work of the Constitutional Court, the Prosecutor’s General Office and the Council of Sworn Advocates, but at the end of the day they will visit the Centre of Continuing Legal Education and Professional Development of the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia.

On Wednesday, delegation of the Supreme Court of Ukraine will be welcomed by the Court Administration and the Ministry of Justice.  The Court Administration will present its experience of work in projects and different e-solutions to increase efficiency of work of courts. In the Ministry of Justice, guests will meet the State Secretary Raivis Kronbergs and Deputy State Secretary in court issues Irena Kucina.
