The Board of Justice supported appointment of Aija Ornina, the judge of Riga city Kurzeme district court, in the post of the Chair of this court, and appointment of the judge of Jelgava court Liga Asmane in the post of the Chair of Jelgava court.

Both judges will be appointed in the post of the Chair of the court for the term of five years.

Liga Asmane had applied in competition for the post of the Chair of Jelgava court, which was announced, because Alberts Kokins, the Chair of Jelgava court, was removed from his post as from July 1, by his own will.

Liga Asmane received qualification of a lawyer at the University of Latvia in 1993. She has been the judge of Jelgava court since 1998; she has also executed duties of the deputy of the Chair of Jelgava court as from 2002. When deciding about suitability of the candidate for the post of the Chair of Jelgava court, competition committee evaluated judge’s long-time experience in the post of the deputy of the Chair of the court, authority gained among court employees, as well as readiness to undertake duties of the Chair of the court.

In its turn, competition for the post of the Chair was arranged in the Riga city Kurzeme district court, because term of office of previous Chair, which was five years, had expired. Aija Ornina has been the Chair of the court since 2008. The Board of Justice supported her candidature for this post also for following five years.

Pursuant to Paragraph Two Section 33 of the law “On Judicial Power”, the Chair of district (city) court has been appointed in the post for term of office of five years by the Minister of Justice, upon coordination with the Board of Justice.
