Today, on June 16, 2020, the powers of Aigars Strupiss as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court come into force. Aigars Strupiss, the former Chair of the Department of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court, has replaced Ivars Bickovics, who had been the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court for twelve years.

Along with the position of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Aigars Strupiss will also be the Chair of the Judicial Council in accordance with the Law “On Judicial Power”.

Aigars Strupiss was nominated for the position of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court by the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court. His candidacy was supported by the Judicial Council. On May 21, the Saeima (parliament) decided to appoint Aigars Strupiss as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The term of office of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court is five years.

Ivars Bickovics maintains the status of a judge of the Supreme Court, and as of June 16 he is a senator of the Department of Criminal Cases of the Senate.

Furthermore, the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court will decide on who will chair the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate in the future. Senator Marite Zagere has been appointed the acting chair of the department until the convening of the Plenary Session.
