JUDGE AIGARS STRUPISS IS APPOINTED AS CHAIR OF THE DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL CASES AND MEMBER OF THE COUNCIL FOR THE JUDICIARY

On September 10, judge Aigars Strupiss was appointed as chair of the Department of Civil Cases at the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court. According to the Law "On Judicial Power", the chairs of departments are appointed by the General Meeting of Judges for a term of five years.

THE SUPREME COURT WELCOMES THE CENTENARY CONFERENCE GUESTS

Guests have already arrived to take part in the Latvian Judges' Conference, which will take place on September 7 and will be devoted to the centennial of the Latvian judicial system. Representatives of the Supreme Courts from countries that also celebrate their centenary are among the guests. These countries are Lithuania, Estonia, Finland and Poland.

JUDGES’ CONFERENCE DEDICATED TO CENTENARY OF THE LATVIAN JUDICIAL SYSTEM WILL TAKE PLACE ON FRIDAY

The Latvian Judges’ Conference, which will be held on September 7, will be devoted to the centennial of the Latvian judicial system and its prospects for the future. The special guests of the conference are representatives of the Supreme Courts from countries that also celebrate their centenary – Lithuania, Estonia, Finland and Poland.

SUPREME COURT CREATES THE “TOP LIST” OF THE MOST VALUABLE JUDGMENTS OF THE SENATE OF LATVIA

As the centenary anniversary of the Senate of Latvia is approaching, the Supreme Court intends to gather information about the most valuable judgments of the Senate (1918-1940), which are referenced in today's rulings, commentaries and publications that have proved to be useful in the work of lawyers (and not just lawyers), drawing on some ideas, arguments or forms of expression. Or such judgements have risen interest regarding legal techniques or expressions utilized.

LATVIAN JUDGES GET READY FOR THE CENTENARY CONFERENCE

This year the Latvian Judges’ Conference will be held on September 7 and will be devoted to the centennial of the Latvian judicial system, and prospects for the future. THE LATEST ISSUE OF “JURISTA VĀRDS” DEDICATED TO BALTIC GERMAN LEGAL SCHOLAR DIETRICH ANDRÉ LOEBER AND THE JUDGMENT OF THE SUPREME COURT REGARDING HIS SON’S CITIZENSHIP

The issue of the periodical “Jurista Vārds” (“Lawyer’s Word”) of July 24 is devoted to the distinguished Baltic German lawyer Professor Dietrich André Loeber (Dītrihs Andrejs Lēbers) (1923-2004), "whose efforts in maintaining the hope in Latvia's independence during the seemingly hopeless years of the Soviet occupation must in no way be forgotten" – the editor-in-chief commented on the theme of the issue.

STUDENTS OF SUMMER SCHOOL OF TURĪBA UNIVERSITY VISIT THE SUPREME COURT

On July 19, Anita Zikmane, Head of the Division of Case-law and Research, met with students from the Summer School of Turība University. Students were coming from Latvia, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Austria, the Czech Republic and Italy. Foreign students had arrived to Latvia for two weeks to take part in the intensive course about mediation. The students showed great interest in the Supreme Court of Latvia, as well as have already visited the Saeima (parliament).

WHAT SHOULD BE DONE SO THAT 80% OF POPULATION OF LATVIA WOULD HAVE CONFIDENCE IN THE JUDICIARY?

This was a question raised during one of the discussions of the conversation festival "Lampa" that took place in Cesis on June 30, in which also Aigars Strupiss and Anita Kovalevska, –judges of the Supreme Court, – took part. Judge Strupiss is also the Chair of the Disciplinary Court, but judge Kovalevska – chair of the Judicial Ethics Commission.
